Front fender vent/emblem removal

I am wanting to paint the vent portion of the front fender emblems & would like to know is there a special tool or way to easily get them off without damaging the fender or the paint??? Do you have to take the whole thing off or can the vent portion be taken off without taking the whole emblem off the fender? Haven't got real serious in trying to get them out but played around with them a little, they seemed to be a little stubborn though. I stopped before I F'd something up. Figured I'd ask some questions first before cussing alot later.

I got mine out by pulling from the outside while a friend pinched the clips and pushed from the inside under the hood. The vents do separate from the outter piece after you remove the entire piece.

I painted mine. Use your fingers to pull them off. It wasn't that bad.
