I've ben getting a little coolant smell when I turn my heat on so I think its time to replace my heater core. How do you remove them? This will be my first one.

Open the glove box, press in the sides to let it drop down. There will be a black box behind it. Take the screws, 8mm, out and the core is behind it. Then go under the hood and take the hoses and push towards the coupling, with the hose pushed in pull out on the plastic clips, one on each side of the pipe, then pull off the hose. Repeat this on the other hose. Make sure to pull the plastic clamps of of the heatrr core pipes before you try to pull it through the firewall. Makes it alot easier to get out. Install new core and hook everything back up. Hope this helps.

OBS truck don't have the quick connect heater hoses like a SD does, they use a spring clamp or someone could have installed regular hose clamps

There are two electrical boxes behind the glove box too, before you get to the heater core cover.

But yes, the core comes out thru the inside of the truck, its very simple.

Ever since I put in my new water pump my heat has had a strange smell. That would be the heater core going bad right?

Normal bad core symptoms are the sweet smell of coolant and fogging or film on the windshield.
