How to remove 08 up mirror top covers?

How do you get the covers off the top of these mirrors? I have searched and searched. Some people say they dont come off others say just 2 tabs. I have failed to figure it out either way. I already have the PTM caps ready to go. Both of my mirrors are OEM. The drivers side has the chrome cap while the passenger is black. Thanks for help.

I believe its just the 2 clips. I've never had mine off. I do know that if you've got a solid black textured one and one with a chrome top you're gonna be upset. The black textured one is a longer piece. The one with a chrome/ptm top is the one that comes off with 2 clips.

yup factory black ones do not come off

Hmmmmmm, I know I have taken several tops off of stock factory 08 and up mirrors that have the textured caps to replace with the ptm ones. They come right off. The ptms area direct fit. The only difference is in the aftermarket caps, the tabs are not as long.

Sorry for the crappy pics. It's raining and dark outside. Both the caps are the same size. The two tabs on the left with the holes are were the top latches together and needs to be released. I usually pop the mirror off and reach back behind with a small pick and push the latches away from the tabs and then the tops will come off.

hmmm all the factory black ones I have seen are one solid piece for the entire back

maybe they changed it for later years?

They look like they are one piece but there is a seam where it meets the upper arm, as shown in the first picture. They do come off and can be replaced with ptm ones.

not all of them.

I dont know why some are and some arent but I have 4 trucks at work that are one solid piece

the ones on my truck are removable(but mine are KoolVue not factory)

Mine are solid one piece too. I actually took apart the mirrors completely to swap them on, as I didn't want the PTM cap that came with them. It would have been alot easier if I could have just swapped the caps.
