I remember when I used to build pc's back in the day you could replace the ribbon cables that went from the mb to the drives and different ports (usb, serial, firewire, etc) with a molex type connector. It basically replaced the ribbon with individual wires which you could then squeeze together to make a round type cable. Here is an example of the molex connectors.
