Ok I have a friend that has a 02 7.3 with a bad IDM been getting code p0603 and idm lose codes. I have traced wires and found nothing but I was wondering what is the best IDM to buy for a stock 7.3? I found several for like 275 with a 1 year warranty is that about the price range?

Yep I would personally get a good used one or get a swamps one. Don't seem to have much luck with aftermarkert repaired electronics in general.

No different, if your core is running the truck then it should be usable.

My IDM completly died and Swamps brought it back and upgraded it, same price. It
made a big difference in the way the truck runs. I would do it again, no question about
it.

If I can get an upgraded part when a part fails I always do it.

just to clarify on "IDM codes"...

IDM (related) codes...do NOT necessarily that there is ANYTHING wrong with the IDM itself...

anything that communicates with, or is controlled by, or is connected to the IDM can cause "IDM codes"...

wiring, injector problems (even internal injector/mechanical problems related to the clearance between the armature and the solenoid), solenoid problems, wiring problems..flaky PCM, etc can all cause "IDM codes"...but have nothing to do with the IDM itself.

Aside from a bunch of guys with oscilloscopes and meters...and injectors with which we test IDMs, we also have an engine simulator...

basically it's an engine..minus the (mechanical) moving parts...a PCM, IDM, all engine sensors, OEM harnesses, etc...

we feed the PCM a 'CPS' signal..so that it thinks the engine is turning/running actually 'firing' the injectors (without oil or fuel)...and we're able to monitor/scope pretty much any damn wire or sensor we want..

we've seen "a" PCM..throw IDM codes with one IDM, and not another...another IDM and PCM combo, no codes..

99% of the time...the generic "IDM codes detected" doesn't seem to matter...in that I've never seen any ill-affects from simply having 'a' code...and FWIW...most of our HVHF IDM's will store "IDM codes"...but obviously don't cause any type of CEL/SES light or otherwise hinder performance.

in short...simply use "codes" as a verrrrrrry loose guideline when troubleshooting a problem or diagnosing an issue.

hmm so this has me in question now. A friend of mine has a idm code in his truck and has a noisey injector. So the injector it self can be causing the problem?

ok I understand better I have been having isuse with this truck for over a month now the first time I had an issuse I parked the truck at night and went in and the next day the guy came to get the truck and it wouldnt start when it did it was running on 3 cylinders. Just put 8 new injectors in with new harness and valve cover gaskets. I put the scan tool on and had 13 codes, so I deleted them and it started we ran for a couple days and it did the same thing again only giving me a lose of comunication with IDM. I cleared the code after following wires and finding nothing. drove the truck and the next day same code again but the truck started missing after it was started. Got the same code again. I called Ford and told them sysptoms and the codes I had seen and they said IDM becoming a problem with the 7.3s around my place. I forgot to add that the issuse with the truck before injectors it had a short in the valve cover gasket on the passanger side and that might have went back to the IDM and shorted the computer.

I am just looking to get the best idea of were to go I am going to go with swamps the owner wants it and he is going to sell.

Thanks for the info and the help.
