I just put a new set of cups in and 2 of them started leaking at about 1000 miles. I was told by a local shop to use red loctite to seal them but i was wonduring if there is something better to use to seal them before i try this again?

nope... thats it... red loctite, I think its #262? 3 things here... you have to make sure you apply it exactly where its needs, that the areas in the head are CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN, and finally that the cups are firmly knocked in and seated completely

I have read about people cleaning the injector bores with wire brushes to get the old sealing material off. What is the best way?

Is it ok if the dust and scrapings fall into cylinder? I imagine they would burn up and blow out but just wondering how the pros do it.

Personally, I would stuff an oily rag down inside the cup hole before doing any cleaning.

Sent from my truck while eating, adjusting the radio and passing a Mustang sideways.

FWIW

I was told the same thing by my local ford and international shops - red loctite
According to a mechanic friends manual, and ex ford diesel tech - green loctite
I went with the 620 green sleeve retainer. have a little over 5K miles as of now

old cups had what look to be red ! LOL IMO probably doesn't matter if applied and installed correctly.

OP not implying you did it wrong. It was the first set I have installed. IIRC you could hear the cup bottom out, did you visually inspect to see that all cups were seated evenly? :toast:

What is causing your cups to fail in the first place? If you know? Was it overheated? Or just a lot of miles? Or high injection pressures?

I read in a Diesel Power article that the cups fail more frequently in colder climates.

I am planning on injectors later this year and was wondering if I should just do my cups while I am at it.

Truck has 113,500 on it now.

I had the same problem. Did cups in my engine, got about 2k on it before the degas bottle started filling with fuel.

I didn't do a good job of cleaning the old crap off there the first time.

The second time, I went and got some pipe brushes and cleaned the holes real well before putting the cups in.

It lasted about 3 months before my engine blew...... :puke::puke::puke:

FWIW, Clay at Riffraff sells the Green Loctite with his cups and tool. Hope it's correct. LOL

Do not do cups as a preventative maintenance. If they leak replace them, but with 120k I would not touch them.

i use a wire ball brush on the end of a 90 degree grinder. I tend to shop vac the port out and also run one round of water through the cooling system to flush it out, unless you have a filter.

Also, you want to install the injectors ASAP. but dont run it for 24 hours

With 219k on my truck should I be worried about injector cups?

347k on the original cups. IMO if there not leaking, no.
