Me and my dad finally got a chance go do my redhead today. All new hardware was used.mounting bolts,nut/lockwasher for pitman.
pitman was torqued to 225ft lbs and then staked for an extra measure.

What sparked this happened about 18 months ago.while traveling down the road at a normal speed of 45-50mph my sector shaft snapped.went hard right, jumped the curb. Only by sheer luck and good brakes I managed to stop, and this isn't a a joke- I stopped 3" before going through a concrete wall. Since I didn't have the luxury of down time I purchased a box from kragen. And reused the pitman arm (bad idea)
The threads were messed up over 25% of surface area.

Anyway,onto the install.

First I sucked most of the fluid out of the system with a hand pump.
I knocked the lines
loose and managed to control the spilling.

Pinch bolt was next. After marking the oriantation I slid the shaft up.

Given I had replaced the pos cheap trackbar drop bracket with a icon piece I had to have the new arm already installed on the redhead box.

Reinstalling the box was easy and went great. A new tie rod end was installed and everything was buttoned up.

For good measure the entire hydraboost was flushed.

Talk about a huge improvement. I can now easily turn 37x12.5 muds with one finger. Going down the country road to my parents there is a ton of teeth rattling wash board. Normally it was be less than ideal.lots of feedback into the steering wheel.truck would feel like I was surfing down the highway, constantly having to keep working the wheel. I had about 2-3"of free play before the steering would correct. And this was on a 18 month old A1 cardon box.

Early last year I assisted one of my sgts with installing a redhead on his 05,he gave me his stock box to use as a core because to much time had passed to get a decent refund. So when I went to washington I dropped the core off in person, saving me a large shipping cost.

Since I was able to keep the box I instalked after the sector shaft snapped. And since the box was showing signs of going bad I warrantied the box.so now I have a NIB gear box. I'll be selling it for $50 to my friend with a 03 f250/7.3 . I'm keeping his old box to hopefully give someine to use as a core so they will have no down time for a new parts house box or one from redhead.

So if someone needs a core for a redhead purchase you can pickup and ship off a factory ford box. All I ask is I get the box off your truck to keep passing on to people that can't afford down time.

Over all,the redhead should be a standard or first modification.

So shoot me a pm and ill give you my cell number. I'm located in vacaville, between sacramento and San fran.

The Redhead is great. We have about 200 miles on ours and so far so good. I did the box w/ linkage AND trackbar bushing and those alone made a huge difference. I finished w/ some bj's. Both my lowers were gone.

Kudos for passing along a core to help others

Does the Redhead box have the larger diameter/stronger sector shaft that the newer SD's had?

I've read of numerous people who have had the shafts break on the earlier model SD's.

Everytime I try and fix the post it won't save it.

Short version-
broke sector shaft
replaced with kragen box
replaced kragen with redhead
flushed hydraboost
truck steering vastly improved
I have an extra core for someone who doesn't want to pay the $200 core charge

The sector shaft size doesn't change. What does change is the internals. They are far superior in strength, tolerances are tighter. I went from not being able to turn 27" tires from a stopped position to turning them with ease.

I used a new icon pitman arm, factory nut and lock washer.

One very important tool is the 16mm flared wrench and standard wrench. Accessing the 2 hose fittings is a little ackward. A 5/8 works in a pinch.

Also, the box ships with new clean fluid in it. so I recommend flushing the entire hydraboost system.it's easy to do. And an extra bonus is it also improves the braking. I also installed new rotors/pads in the front and bled the entire brake system with fresh fluid. The combo of fresh brakes, fresh brake fluid and fresh fluid flush on the hydra boost made the truck fun to drive again. Knowing that If I have to mashed the brakes I'll co.e to a stop in a straight line and not have to worry a about loosing my entire steering.

Now I just need to get an alignment.
Locally there's not much for shops that can correctly align a lifted truck. Les Schwab is a joke and most brand name stores don't know specs beyond stock settings.
I'm hopeful that the lcoal diesel shop, red label diesel can get it done

Man, far be it from me to tell somebody how they need to word things, but I personally would have explained that a little better....
LOL I see I'm not the only one whose mind went straight to the gutter when they first read that post.

Probably 7k on my redhead and I love it
I've got about 40k on mine at this point and still happy with it. Driving a lifted truck, I wasn't used to how tight and responsive it was at first... took a little getting used to. It's worn in now and not nearly as noticeable as it was at first lol.

Got the truck aligned today
I couldn't be happen with how much it improves the driving.
Although I did have a scare. The tech doing the alignment.he saw fluid coming off the sector shaft.at first I was thinking bad seal, but I told myself that this is a redhead and it's got to be something else. After cleaning up everything im thinking that I possibly over filled the pump reservoir. I was still on the original caps its possible. I'll keep an eye on it for a few days.

Love my redhead. Made the mistake and bought a benchworks box. Pulling that crap out and sending it to redhead.

I can't get a shop to do an alignment because my rims don't have a lip... I'm sure there is another way to do this

Four wheel parts should have one... i have the same problem, luckily I know the owner of my alingment shop and he fights for about 10min for each tire with wd40 to get them in... has to use bungee cords to make sure it stays..

Found a place that can align me. Do they use factory specs? Or do I need to find aftermarket ones? Also, wouldn't this be the best time to buy a track bar and have them set it?
