Do you need to pull the motor to replace the oil cooler? I dont won a 7.3 but my cousin said his is bad and the mechanic said he needed to pull the motor to replace it. Is he getting the shaft?:bs:

But doesn't require it to be pulled right? Can't be any worse then working on my 6.0. So should he challenge the guy working on it or let it be? Just looking out for him.

it doesnt have to be pulled some guys i hear will raise the driverside of the engine up by loosening the mount and lifting with a 2x4 and floor jack to make a little more room

I did two of them this winter. On a superduty, you don't need to lift the motor up. It wasn't too bad of a job just messy. Sounds like the shop is trying to screw him over...

Get really creative and it'll will go in. Coming out was the easier part. Take the oil filter off first and let it drain a while. Then take the block heater out and let that drain. Makes life a little easier. I did it on my obs with out lifting the motor. Took 2 hours maybe with a few curse words in between.

Oh, and a little tidbit I learned to do on the second one I did. There are some notches that line up how the ends go on, but there is a little bit of give either way. Somehow mark exactly how they are so the install will go a little smoother.

Hell, pull the front of the truck. Takes no time since.you're waiting for coolant to.drain anyway.

Pulling the motor to fix one would be ludicrous. As would pulling the motor and not rebuilding the oil cooler.

I used lithium grease on the orings and used a 20 ton H-press and it was done in about two minutes.

If your cousin buys in to this whole "pull the motor" deal you should try to convince him he needs to pull the bed to fill the fuel tank.

What I meant here is that its easier to.get at the.bolts. You can stand in the engine bay and use an impact and swivel and run em off.

Some of you all must blow over in a stiff wind. I use a press to put mine back together, I press down with my hands...

I dont know where you got your orings but mine even with lithium grease on them wouldnt go that easy. Im not trying to unmanly anyone but i grabbed mine and leaned on it and pushed and it didnt even BEGIN to seat. I can roll a full 7.3 over on an engine.stand by myself usually with one arm so the theory that im 130lb wafer is out.

I have done mine twice and there is no leaning, pressing, or pushing it together. In fact, I once tried to pound one on with a 4lb'er and a 2x4 block, no dice.

I can grab the ends and rip them off with one hand though :D
