It is most likely not leaking there...

it is usually the non-servicable plug on the bottm of the pump running back, or your timing cover bolt is stripped and running down the back of the pump....

IF and thats a big IF you have the back plate leaking, you better make sure you get the snap ring in a clean groove, and not scrape it all to hell getting it out...or your pump will **** its guts out in the valley.....

hose it down with brake cleaner and clean it all off then start the truck and have someone romp on the throttle a couple times while you watch it..... i thought the same thing once on mine and it turned out to be a plug on the upper backside thats either a allen head or torx head with a oring seal.

I thought mine was that plug also, but it turned out to be the gasket between the pump face and the timing cover.

Here is a pic from diesel site. It is called a non-serviceable plug but they are and you can replace them.

As you can see from the pic below its location way back under the IPR and squeezed right up underneath and against the res is why you can not see it without a mirror and light.

Point is if its not leaking from the rear plate which you should be able to see and the leak is coming from underneath where you can not see its almost surely the plug. Pull the HPOP and change it out.

Here is the link to DieseSite and their repair plug kit to replace it with: http://www.dieselsite.com/highpressureoilpumphpoprepairplug.aspx

You can make a HPOP hose QD tool buy grinding out the square notch in a body panel removal tool into a u shape that fits over the QD fitting of the HPOP hose connector. Super easy with a round file or dremel type tool. See second pic for the before and after mod to the tool

Here is what a new one looks like in full veiw before mod so you will know what to look for at the chain auto store which they all carry it for under $10

the rear plug in the pic tarm posted is the one i was talking about but i coulda swore mine was not a regular bolt head like that... maybe i was thinking the fuel bowl plug was that plug.... but either way the rear plug is what loosened up and blew the oring out...

to pull the hpop? or just the plug? if you mean the hpop, you dont need any special tools, basic metric sockets, and a few extensions, and a good 3/8 ratchet. 10mm bolt heads hold the hpop on the timing cover, iirc its a 17 or 18 mm socket to get the bolt out of the hpop gear, be careful, there is a washer on the bolt too. you will probably have to remove the fuel bowl too. ive only replaced one 7.3 hpop, but one of the powerstroke mechanics at work says he doesnt have to remove the bowl b/c he has done it so many times... im honestly not sure if its true or not, but the bowl is easy to remove too
