only when it is locked in 4x4 does it do it while under load or coasting.... i can lock the hubs in and leave it in 2wd and no noise. i can leave the hubs unlocked and switch it to 4wd and no noise(esof has not worked in a year) so the hubs don't lock automatically anymore... but as soon as i lock the hubs in and switch it to 4wd the howl/hum is realy loud....

just replaced both unit bearings and axle ujoints... drive shaft joints are still good... drained the tcase fluid and some small flakes came out but no chunks.... drained front diff to see if anything was loose and everything was solid but the oil was off color, looked like someone dumped silver dust in it and mixed it up.. changed the front diff oil last summer and didn't even look that bad only milky from moisture then.. so is it possible i could have a bearing wore and is howling?

what else should i check?

pinion doesn't move. when i looked at all the gears in the diff they all looked even as in no obvious grooves. had my brother spin the drive shaft back and forth and the ring and pinion moved in unison with each other no slop that i could tell with the naked eye...
same with spyder and axle gears... spyders might have had just a little bit of wiggle on the cross pin but thats the only thing and not much at that...

If the front end checks out. Look closely at the ujpints in the front shaft. If ok you may need to tear into the tcase. Might have shock loaded it.

Sounds like a t-case to me. Lock it in 4x4. Put the truck in neutral, someone grab rear drive shaft and turn, at the same time grab the front and see how much slop you have between the two. If that make sense lol, been up for 30 something hours.

Ok so I put it in 4wd and rocked the drive shafts back and forth... there's about 3/8" of rotation in the front drive shaft at the tcase when I hold the rear drive shaft to one side or the other.

still have no clue where this noise is coming from!! is it possible the noise is radiating from the rear end through the tcase when its locked in 4wd...

Ujoints in the rear shaft are just over a year old and are spicers from ford... maybe have 25k miles on them. No slop in them.. haven't checked rear pinion yet.

I know this is an old one but mine started doing this now. Didn't do it last winter so somethings changed. Just wondered what you came up with?
