Does the seal around the crank, and the o ring between the pump housing and front cover seal off the suction side of the oil pump? Mine is wet around the seal and I was wondering if a bad seal in this area could introduce air into the lpo.

Wet on the outside and visible? Could just be some leaking past the key slot maybe?

Mainah!
I'm wondering if mine is leaking there, too. I had seepage from the front connection of the oil cooler, I fixed that, but still getting oil from somewhere. Not enough to drip tho. It definitely seems to be a very slow front-end leak.

Not coming from my cps either. The leak doesn't bother me that much but I was wondering if it will suck air if there is a leak at the oring.

Are you sure its not coming from around the LPOP outcase edge ( the oring gasket)

If its the main seal you need to pull the harmonic balancer and then pull the seal from the pump. No hard at all but honestly I would just spend the $50 and upgrade to the Melling LPOP from Advanced Auto and that way you have the new seal and pump. Its also possible you are having oil leak around the balancer key way. Be sure to put some grey rtv around key and race way to ensure a good seal.

Here is a link with pictures and instructions etc on dealing with the LPOP and front seal. It has to be one of the easiest engines to deal with the LPOP.

I am not 100 percent on where the leak is coming from on the pump. I just know that it is the pump. Whatever it is, it will all be replaced when I pull the pump anyways. I already have a melling in there.

I was just wondering if a leak in this area will suck air into the lpo stream.

That procedure that you posted was a little more indepth than what I have. It isn't an excerpt from the engine assembly instructions. Do you have a shop manual?

I very much doubt it would pull air in. It would have to be a serious hole. The oil itself would seal off much of it.

If its already a melling then I am guessing its likely the oring did not get sealed evenly and is leaking near one of the bolt positions or its leaking from that key area.

I would not worry about air getting in. Like Tarm stated, unless there is a serious hole there should be no way for air to get in there. If you are not worried about the small oil leak than I would say just leave it. Unless you want a reason to replace the LPOP.
