Looks like they put the failure-prone item on top where it is easy to replace :)

Judging by the coolant placement, it also looks like it is not plumbed in series with the oil cooler either, wonder if it has it's own cooling system. Looks like a 6.4 intake manifold. The EGR flow and coolant are not ported through it and the mouth for the intake elbow is angled forward. Kinda hard to tell but it even looks like the VGT actuator resembles the one on the 6.4 also.

I guess it's one of those things where they only have to manufacture one part to cover both engines to cut production cost

That's not a HEUI pictured. That's the MAXXFORCE 7. Seems to me there is either a type o or its just a general picture or they're using 6.0 blocks and 6.4 bolt ons

No they are using the common rail rocker boxes and covers, if you look on the internet there are pictures of it on the other side showing the FICM mounted. I thought the same at first until I looked around.

EDIT:

Here's the other side.

Well, in IH platform, they don't use a FICM, they call it a IDM, injector driver module. That one there looks to be an all in one unit, PCM/IDM.

The 6.4 Rocker boxes don't bolt to 6.0 heads. Everything on that motor screams 6.4/MF7. rockers, single turbo, front cover, etc. Also there is the hole for injector harness. They are not going to redesign a new harness to Daisy chain the injector harnesses. Navistar is in huge financial trouble, I doubt they are redesigning anything.

Only thing I can think of this is a 6.0 block with 6.4 uppers... But doubtful

I don't know here, but I think it's just a mixed up file picture.

You know who would know? Bulletproof
