guys long story short, i replaced my ipr earlier this afternoon, took a bit of cranking, fired off, same thing happened when it was time to go home. let it high idle for 15 minutes, put in reverse, instantly died. had air in the system, cranked and cranked, finally pulled icp, put oil in rail, fired right off after. came home, let sit for a few hours, went to start and i think the starter **** the bed on me. batts are brand new interstates, high output alternator just installed like 2 months ago, starter has been weak for a while now. so my question is should i go with an oreillys starter??? i need my truck back up this weekend, but dont want to spend money on a total piece of ****. there is a guy who rebuilds our starters at work, i trust his work more, but he doesnt come till thursday, which is not an option, but said he would charge me $150 to rebuild it

Not sure about oreillys products, but im on my 3rd one in one truck from advance auto parts. They keep replacing for free so I can't complain too bad. My 95 has had a aa starter on it for about 4 years without issue, I think they are hit or miss on quality.

150 bucks to rebuild a starter? I can get a fresh rebuild with motorcraft parts for like 60 bucks at a local shop. I'd check around early may have a shop that rebuilds.

I am on my second rebuilt O'Reillys starter. First one only lasted 100K miles. No receipt, it took them longer to look up the record of the sale, (they gotta have it yo get their money back from the rebuilder) than it did for me to replace the starter.

Yep. Or you can just pay the core charge if you want to keep your core. No need to really though.

As good as your buddy is, if his starter fails on you 150 miles from him, you are screwed. Bet you could still find an O'Reilly's though.

If your truck still has the orginial starter it will be a 2 bolt. 02s had 2 bolt starters. Get a 3 bolt for any 95-01 7.3 to replace it. No matter where you get a remand one.

The 2 bolt ones wont last half as long as the 3 bolt.

No, I was talking about your buddy that rebuilds starters. For the price he charges, you can get one from O'Reilly's that is a lot easier to warranty out.

One rule about rebuilt starters and alternators, they have to come with a lifetime warranty, they have to be easy and quick to warranty out. O'Reilly's fits that, they are in most any city you go to in this part of the country. If you take a trip to Austin and your starter takes a dump, there is an O'Reilly's there to warranty it out. If your buddy rebuilds it, it is a long way from Austin back to him to get it warrantied out. Not saying anything bad about your buddies rebuilding skills, just that when you rebuild a starter, you are usually not replacing windings or armature.

look into the nippendenso starter part#17802 (about $160 with $54 core) it is a large gear reduction, it has good quality and is very fast (factory is visteon), only downfall is some trucks have clearance issues with the engine crossmember.
i often use the remy starters part#17250 lifetime $169.99 core is $100 (rebuilt 3 bolt mitsubishi type) and 99402 $204.99 lifetime (new mitsubishi no core)

Ahhhh im retarded, but understand what you mean. I price from ford:280 plus core, napa was 169 with core, and oreilys was 165 with no core. I went with oreillys, and will get my other starter rebuilt

With no core, that sounds like a good plan. With time, some of Power-Struck's options sound good. But if you gotta get your truck on the road, local is the best option. Like I said, my first O'Reilly's went 100K miles with no issues. I have never really had any issues with O'Reilly's reman parts. I did have one alternator only last a month, but only one issue in over twenty years, I guess I should not complain.

I carry a spare starter in my auto truck. Never had one fail yet but the one that was on it started hanging a little and grinding so. The spare went on and had the other rebuilt.

I've got about 150k miles on my reman O'Reilly's starter. Been doing just fine so far. It's been awhile since I replaced it, but I think mine might have been a 2 bolt too.
