Hello All,
From reading about my issue on the various forums I have come to realize that I have a bad (or going bad) Mechanical Diode. And everyone seems to be in agreement that a rebuild or new tranny is in the cards. I have read quite a lot of good reviews about BTS Transmissions and may go down that road, but he 1200 miles from me so shipped would have to be the way to go. My main question to you all is does anyone know of a trust worthy person to do the work, say, within 200 miles of me. I live in Eastern CT, and I find most forum recommendations for shops are not in my area.

Thank you all for your input, suggestions, comments, and all around knowledge.

there is some components called O/D Diode and Low Diode ( not mechanical diode )
but not sure a issue with them is worthy of a trans replacement

sounds fishy

Weren't the 01's notorious to have that problem ? I seem to remember one of our 7.3s needing a new tranny after something with the diode. Fortunately it was under warranty. That was a long time ago. I don't remember all the details other then the diode was what Ford blamed it all on back then.

Maybe Mark Kovalsky can chime in on the issue. For some reason, I remember my dad having one of those transmissions in his 01 F-350 and it grenaded. I think it was just a few months that had them in the 4r100.

In 2001 Ford changed the intermediate one way clutch for a new design, which the supplier that produced the part named a Mechanical Diode. That was a brand name of a specific type of one way clutch. It was a disaster. It was pulled from production within days. All the gas engine trucks were supposed to get new transmissions before leaving the factory. I've heard stories of a couple that snuck out.

Diesels kept the Mechanical Diode until March, 2001.

I don't know the specifics of what went wrong with the design. Ford used Mechanical Diodes in other transmissions before and since and they have been remarkably trouble free. But that one had an EXTREMELY high failure rate. In fact, my coworker who discovered the problem, demonstrated over and over that he could blow up a Mechanical Diode within two shifts. He did it on several trucks straight off the assembly line.
