I got the cab back down and finished tonight after doing a headgasket job, we topped off all the fluids and decided to take it for a spin. After the initial startup whenever I'd go to start, it took about 5 times longer than normal to crank before it started. Then once I got it started it was blowing quite a bit of white smoke out of the exhaust, I didn't think much of it at first. Well when I went to pull out of the driveway it had a pretty noticeable vibration in the engine, so I stopped and popped the hood and pulled the oil fill and it had a ton of blow by and the oil had a definite diesel smell. So my question is where do I start looking for my problem? Is it a leaking fuel line or injector? Any help would be great, I'm at a loss and don't want to go down the wrong path.

Could be alot of things.

I would assume you had all the injectors out?

Make sure all the under valve cover lines are tight

Did you do anything to the injectors like nozzles?

Did you have the pump out?

Yes I had all the injectors out and I followed the process for the fuel tubes, from the rail to injector. I torqued the injector hold down clamps to the recommended setting, other than that how am I supposed to know if they were seated right? The injectors are stock by the way.

did you install new fuel lines? Sounds like possibly a crack allowing fuels to leak and or air into the system when its shut off

Yes I installed all new hpfp to rail fuel tubes and all new rail to injector tubes. I followed the torque process in the tech section of this site.

I would recommend to pull valve covers off, add some oil/fuel dye in the fuel bowl so you can identify where the leak is coming from. Use a uv light with the dye.

Well I found the leak. I ended up pulling the passenger side valve cover and started it and fuel was spraying out the back of the ported rails. Evidently after they were ported and put back together the end plug wasn't tightened down. Definetely a heads up for anybody ordering ported rails to check the ends for sure. I want to thank Dustin for helping me pinpoint where to start with it, he was a huge help.
