So I've had an '04 Powerstroke (with a built 6.0) for a little over two years now. Rarely drive her, to be honest - just when I need to shuffle stiff around and what not. Haven't put 15k on her in two+ years. She's literally performed flawlessly for the entire time - but I still have concerns. When I'm towing, she can get hot - real hot. Wondering what I should be trying. Exhaust temps can hit 1300+ at the slightest uphill. I usually downshift or drop a gear, push a little more air, and she cools down to 1000-1100 pretty quickly. That's not my biggest worry, however. The darn water temps can get to 230+ before I even know what's going on if conditions are right (or wrong!). For example, today I towed a half-ton pickup on a car hauler trailer. Outside temps are pretty hot here right now, well over 90 in the heart of the day.... So it's a hot one. My oil temps get to 225, and the water can hit 230 in a heartbeat. I've never once heard the fam clutch come on - ever. Radiator is new, oil cooler is new - heck, I'd say almost the ENTIRE power train is new or rebuilt.... So what gives? Why is she running so hot? She never spews coolant, and will cool down on the level spots, but 220 is almost a given, and 230+ is not out of the ordinary. Today she was a stone's throw from 240, and I just about wet my pants. That's scary hot in the gas world. Is that normal to diesel folks? I appreciate your input on all of this. I'm a rookie to all of this, but am willing to learn. I love this truck, and she'll pull like there's no tmrw..... But she gets crazy not while she's at it. Where would you start looking first?
