Ok Guys, My boss owns a Early 99 Regular Cab 7.3L Automatic with around 240k on the clock. He was driving it monday night and All of a sudden it lost power, began running rough and died. When he attempted to restart it, It would fire consistently but never pop off. Yesterday I threw in a new cam sensor and still the same thing. I then threw a computer on it and did a buzz test and it passed with flying colors. While randomly cranking it yesterday I got it to start for about 5 minutes. With it floored it wouldnt go over 2000 rpm and was running very rough and smoking like crazy. When I let it return to an idle it died and again does the same thing, just turns over and fires consistently but will NOT restart. Duty cycle while cranking is 40 to 60 percent, which I thought was way high for cranking numbers. ICP while cranking builds up to 1600 and would continue to go up if we continue to crank. I Replaced the ICP sensor with a know good one, Replaced the IPR with a known good one, Replaced the hpop with a spare we had. Swapped the IDM with a known good one. It has Great Fuel Pressure, Cranks Fast as hell. Codes are very inconsistent. Codes We had, that come and go are P1212 and P1280. Still All it does is crank and Fire. With Starting fluid it hits right away and runs great, No hesitation at all but dies immediately when you let off on the stating fluid. Cant Seem to figure it out. Every Test Seems to pass. Any Help would be very Appreciated. Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post.

We also checked all fuses, The oil pressure gauge on the dash comes up while cranking and HPO reservoir is full. The only thing we haven't changed is the PCM and it seems to be working correctly.

Just Got a P1298 Code After a buzz test. Its an IDM Code, but We have swapped IDMs so again Im at a complete loss unless the IDM we installed is bad but I think that is unlikely because it was good a few months ago when it was pulled.

monitor ICP pressure while cranking...zero chance of starting until ICP reaches @ 500psi

with that number of miles, it's likely that the injectors are pissing their guts out under the valve covers, not allowing the HPOP to produce the minimum mechanical pressure to fire the injectors.

you can put a gauge on the head to check the HPOP pressure..or use a scan tool...or even a multimeter to monitor the voltage (during cranking) at the ICP sensor itself to see if your no start condition is related to a lack of ICP pressure.

Found The problem. We had fuel pressure and the gauge said 3/4 of a tank but I guess the gauge was wrong and we must have been pumping right off the bottom of the tank. We put diesel in it and I left the fuel bowl open and let some of the old diesel flow out and got a little bit of new fuel into the system and it started firing more all the time. It started and ran like sh!t for some time but after we got new diesel into the system it is running normal again. Talk about feeling like a dumba$$, but since it had great pressure the whole time I never gave that any thought.

It didn't have 'great fuel pressure'.... :naughty: glad you got it fixed!

Ha well it was good enough to be spraying out when I was unscrewing the fuel bowl lid and refilled the bowl almost instantly when i had my boss turn the key on. It should have been more than enough to start it but I know what your saying, it was a really dumb mistake.

I would draining and cleaning that tank.

Sent from my truck while eating, adjusting the radio and passing a Mustang sideways.

Then at least throw a bottle of fuel treatment in there and fill it up with clean diesel. For a few tanks fill it at the half tank level.
