Last night we got our first freezing temps (Texas) I get up this morning around 8 or so to go start the truck (about 38 to 40 degrees now) and turn the key and let it do its cycle and did this about three times. I then go to start it and it wouldnt start. When I tried to start it it would crank but would not start no matter what I did. I figured I let it sit for a while and come back. I go a work on a boat for about 2hrs and come back. I let the injection put do its thing and tried turning it on again... Nothing. It did the same thing as before. It would crank and clunk but would not start. I tried again for about 5 times and had the same thing happen again. Im thinking it could be flooded (i know right) so I press the peddle and do the same procedure.... Nothing. I then decided to charge the batteries since it lost some charge trying to crank. Once charged again I press the peddle and try to start again. This time it started but would only stay on if i gave it throttle. I kept on the throttle (loud as hell and smoke everywhere) and it finally would stay on on its own. I let it warm and drove 20 miles back to my house. At idle the ficm would read out 48 to 48.5 volts but the faster I went the lower it would go and the more erratic it would get. Cruising 65 it would bounce from 28 to 35.

After some researching it came down to about three things
Glow Plugs
FICM
Crank Shaft Position Sensor

Any other things it could be and which are more likely?

Thank you!

Yea when the ficm went on mine it just totally made my truck run like crap. Some trucks gradually get worse while others just crap out.

When my truck didn't start it was the stc fitting that took a dump. But if your ficm at any point reads under, I think? 47.5v? Its bad. I know 48 is what it is supposed to be to properly operate the injectors. Cranking the batteries way down I am certain did not help the ficm either.

FICM is not a concern until volts go below 45v

Any chance it could be the stc fitting also?

What year is your truck? The 2005-2007 6.0s had that stupid fitting. If its older then you shouldn't worry about it.

If your ICP isn't at .8v(500 psi) or higher when cranking the injectors won't fire.

So let me make this clear before I drop another 500. At idle my ficm was making 48 to 48.5 volts (read with my sct livewire ts) but sometimes it started out in the 30s and then it got there. So not matter what, if it every goes bellow 45 volts its shot?

Thank ya sir

Most times on a cold start when you turn on the key and watch FICM voltage it'll drop really low while the injectors are chattering, soon as they stop it'll jump back up to 48ish

I've seen them drop as low as 20v

I would venture to bet if you pull the codes you will find a P0611- FICM performance code which plain and simple means you need a FICM.
