I am working on a 2000 7.3 6 spd all stock 304K miles. First time I looked at it took about 20 sec. of cranking to get the oil pressure gauge on the dash to show pres. and then it would start. So I think great lpop. Now I have the truck at my house hooked up to the IDS. It still take a bit to show oil pressure but will not start at all. Hpop res is full. IPR maxed out @ 65% after about 10 sec. of cranking only builds about 180 psi ICP.

OH yeah heres the kicker, just left the dealer they resealed the hpop.

And now it starts after 5 sec of cranking. Idling semi smooth 600+ psi ICP @ idle and 14% DC on the IPR

I am lost here

OK little more history here, For the last few thousand miles he would be on the road steady for 2-300 miles and the truck would stumble and stall no restart. Tow it home(flatbed) fire right up drive off the trailer no problem and continue to run fine for a while. Did this a few times right about 2-300 miles out. Motor(factory reman) only has roughly 140K miles and has been on 10K intervals for oil changes running royal purple 15w-40. Current oil has approx. 1800 miles on it. I am going to send in a oil sample tomorrow(S.O.S.).

Also while free revving the engine it seems a little rough around 2K. Don't know if these are related or not. After my second post truck continues to restart, LOOOONG crank still though.

Maxing out the IPR duty cycle and only building around 200psi generally points towards a sticking IPR. I would pull it, clean it and reseal it at a minimum.

Well I got the IPR pulled last night. It looks clean as a whisle with brand new seals. I still have it out, brought it to work with me today.

304k on original injectors?

injs are most likely leaking HPOil (poppet valves)

oil cools off, thickens up...restart until oil viscosity drops after it's hot again..at which point it dies...

I will check on the mileage on the injectors. I was assuming they were replaced with the motor roughly 140K miles ago.

Well I got the IPR completely torn down and it is clean as a whisle. I will reassemble and reinstall. Send out oil sample today. Verify mileage on injectors.

Injectors were replaced with the engine approx. 140K miles ago. Reinstalled IPR, refilled hpo res. started after about 5-6 sec. of cranking. Running a little rough, ran a contribution test before pulling IPR got a code for #3 and #8 ran test again after installing IPR and got codes for #2, #3 and #8. Waiting on results on oil sample.

OK, Its been a while, I removed LPOP to inspect, pump shows minimal signs of wear and front cover shows no wear. I have noticed that the truck takes quite some time to start if it has been setting for a while. If the truck is running and I shut it down and within a few seconds crank it over again it fires almost immediately. With mechanical oil pressure gauge it will hold 35 -37psi at idle. It does not register oil pressure until right after truck fires. I am at a total lose here. Does anybody know where the check valve for the lpo system is? I am going to take a look there next.

So just to make sure the problem you are having is that the truck starts and runs sometimes and other times it doesnt start? Or is there a problem with the truck not building oil pressure? Or both?

THe oil pressure sensor is at the top of the HPOP Res. That tends to take a second to two to show up on the gauge.

But I think you may have an issue with your HPOP Res draining back down to pan and that may explain the long crank time after it has set for a while but then fires right up after its been started the first time.

Let the truck sit over night or however long it takes for it to be hard to start. Pull either the oil pressure sensor or access plug in the top of the res and look in there. You should see oil with a 1" of the top of the lid. If there is no oil then that is your issue.

If I had taken off the LPOP I would have just gone ahead and changed it out for a melling. Its a better design and puts out a bit more volume. They are only $70 list and if you look for some online discount codes for the autp parts stores you can get it for less. I ended up ordering online for pickup at my local store whihc had one instock. This way I could get the online discounts but not have to wait to have it shipped to me. Ended up paying $49

If the truck sits overnight it takes approx 20-30 sec of cranking to start. I have let it set for 3 days and the oil in the hpop res. is full to the top. and I currently have a manual oil pressure gauge installed in the inspection plug in the top of the hpop res.

Do you think there could be a leak under the valve cover leaking hpo? It almost feels like it has air in the hpo system after it starts. It does not run very "crisp" it feels a little "choppy".
