A zf6 out of a sd. The strength would depend on the clutch you put in it. I think stock the zf6 is only rated 50 more ft/lb torque than a zf5.

Unless there is a problem with your 5 speed there is no real reason to put a 6 speed in. If would be different if it was just a bolt in project but it isn't, and if you think that you will get a higher over drive gear then do some checking. The gear ratio on the 5 speed isn't that much different than the 6 speed but you do get a lot closer ratio gears from first-six.

The zf6, and the zf5, are bullet proof trannies. NOT worth the time re-engineering the entire truck to fit the zf6 though in my opinion.

They are not bulletproof......

Everything can be broken.

They are bullet proof compared to most other stock trannies on the market.

if you were going from an automatic to a standard i would say go for it all day long, but since you already have a 5 speed i dont think its worth the time and effort for what you get out of it. the 6 speed is alot larger than the 5 so you would have to modify the floor and possibly driveshafts.

if you want to be all gung ho about being different you could get a eaton 6 speed. it would bolt right up with a #2 bell plate.

Eaton 6spd... Now that's an interesting idea. Are they overdrive trannies or just straight 6spds?

The Easton's are synchronized as well and come in od and direct I worked in a trans shop for a while they seem to be one of the better medium duty transmissions out there. I don't know about a t case though

I've rebuilt dozens of eaton 6speeds and I don't think they hold up any better than a zf6. I see lots of synchro issues out of them

We rebuilt eaton 5 and 6 speeds spicer 5's and 7's and zf's. out of all of them fewer Easton's came back than anything else. Spicer 7's came back more than anything

is what way? they shift just as easy if thats what you mean, the pattern is a little different
R 1 3 5
|-|-|-|
2 4 6

i feel you can shift them about the same speed the eaton may be a little quicker but i havnt spent alot of time shifting a zf6 in a truck
