Ok so after replacing the factory plastic interior door handle for the second time I'm gonna actually fix the real problem. The hinge the handle bolts to has some serious wear and I'm looking at replacing it. Anyone know where to get these new? I hate to go through the trouble of putting one in out of a junkyard and have the same problem 6 months from now. Also, I heard someone say you could get the interior handles metal instead of plastic. Anyone heard about or know where to get them?

The local napa here can get the metal handles and if i'm not mistaken they're actually for the older model f-series trucks. i'm having the same problem with mine right now breaking handles but its actually the metal that it bolts to. Over the years it's tore the metal to the point it won't open the door and I yanked too hard and snapped the handle off again. I'm going with metal handles once i weld the door back up. As far of as the hinge goes you may be able to get it through LMC truck too.

80-86 fgens had the black metal handles. I think I am going to bootleg some from my 84 project before I sell it.

If you havent, also check the door frame they tend to crack around where handle bolts to. I had this happen to me a used a 3/8 fender washer to fix it.

Thanks guys! But I've looked real good at it and it appears to be the hinge itself. There's a pin running through it that's about 1/4 in diameter and the hole has expanded to about 7/16 lol

Once you fix the source the plastic handles wont break. Even if your hinge hasn't broken the metal it mounts to pull it off and brace it before it does.

I found my LMC catalog and the assembly is 50 bucks. Kinda pricey but you could prolly get it out of a junkyard for about half that.

I'm curious, is this issue related to the handles being stiff or pull? We just picked up a 96' and both handles are quite stiff. This discussion has me worried I may end up in the same boat you guys are with busted handles.

I had the same problem. I went to a junk yard and got the whole assembly for about $25. I for holding the hinge on I got a about a 2" by 2" piece of flat and threaded it and used the factory bolt. It's been probly one and a half years and no problems yet.

If you take care of the cable and mechanism you wont have any problems. If its stiff or the handle pulls too far before releasing the latch you will start breaking handles. The door should open about halfway through the handles travel. I have owned 5 OBS truck and never broken a handle. Also you can get the cable alone from NAPA.
