Oil Leak by HPOP

I noticed an oil leak on my truck and, upon investigation, found that I had a brass looking bushing, a locking nut? and something broken beyond description. If you're facing the truck from the front and look down in the valley, the parts appear to have come from a sensoe attached to the HPOP, just to the right of and below the fuel bowl. I tried to look it up in my Haynes manual, but couldn't identify it. My motor is only about 3 1/2-4 months old, so I'm very curious as to what this could be and why I would have so much oil in the valley. All of the oil is coming from the front of the valley. Any help is much appreciated.

the sensor your talking about is an IPR

Can you elaborate? I've changed cps's, uvch's and some other stuff on 7.3's, but not a lot else. I was able to put the "bushing" and nut back on. Will that fix the leak? Do I need to replace the whole unit? I have a very expensive motor that is 31/2 to 4 months old and don't want to ruin it. Please excuse my lack of hands on experience. I never had any real problems til I got beyond stock.

check out dieselorings.com they have a kit for that, I think its common for the ipr nut to come loose, check the site and see if that is what you need.

The bushing and nut aint' stopping no leak. We are talking IPR o-rings at least, new IPR at worst.

Check out this page:

It will tell you how to remove it, clean and inspect it. You don't need that silly homemade tool though. Put a deep well socket 1/2" drive on there and grab it with a ratchet. You will not be able to fully seat the ratchet, but you will be able to hook enough to turn, don't get in a hurry.

You can get the o-rings from Guzzle

You nailed it. I'm more than a little disappointed by this. What kind of bad things occur from this not operating properly?

OK, since you are not up on HUEI, I will give a quick oversimplified explanation.

The fuel system is low pressure (65 PSI or so), it is supplied to each injector.

Each injector is a electronically fired hydraulic pump. The hydraulic fluid is engine oil, it is supplied to the HPOP by the LPOP. It is from there, sent to the injectors at a high pressure (1000 - 3000 PSI) OK, not actually correct, but you get the message. The injectors see this hydraulic pressure, they see this fuel pressure, all of a sudden, they get an electical pulse from the IDM to fire. The hydraulic oil (HPOP oil), sends the fuel to the cylinders at the needed super high (no clue, but it will cut you type pressure) pressure to make the motor happy. The IPR (Injection Pressure Regulator) is the valve that controls the pressure of the oil going to the injectors. It is a valve that sends it to the injectors or bleeds it back to the sump.

If you don't have it out already...this might help you see what you're up against.

Personally, if I have to pull a sensor...it gets replaced by a factory new OEM sensor. Throw the used one (provided it's in good shape), put new orings on it from Guzzle mentioned above, and throw it in the tool box on your truck as a spare.

This will make a mess, lay a some paper towels down in the valley.

Good luck, and don't worry..once you get this replaced/re-oringed...you'll have your truck back up to snuff.

Nice avatar BTW.

If you need a part number for the IPR kit from IH or Ford let me know.

Thanks for all the help. I just put everything I could find back on the HPOP. I was at the laundry-mat at the time. Will I ruin my injectors if I drive it like it is?

No you should be OK there. I am still very curious what was broken? That tin nut is very easy to have back off from vibration.
