good day mates,
so in response to a demand from a few friends and the pesky "oil soaked" boots commonly associated with 6.0 powerstrokes due to the Crank case ventilation system (CCV) that takes blow-by from the crank case and routes it into the intake boot pre-turbo, led me into doing a bit of research into how I could delete it and or/ reroute it so that the oil no longer went into the compressor of the turbo and cease oiling up the boots leading to blown boots and oil soaked boots just needing replaced. Seems like a no brainer as long as the Crank Case Vent is properly vented right?? SO I did my research only to be stupified by the retail sharks out there trying to stick it to us DIY'ers once again... ** Diesel has a kit for 375.00. I set out on a mission to beat that and be able to show everyone how easy it actually is to do. If anyone has any questions or concerns please feel free to private message me. would love to help you find whatever you need if you cant find the parts I could find so readily available.
Back to the project...
I removed the intake and the intake tube leading to the turbo and disconnected the CCV breather tube from the bottom of the tube and the valve cover. From there, I cut the rubber hose off the bottom of the intake boot to the turbo short- just long enough to hold a plug which I hose clamped into place so that the intake is no longer pulling in that nasty oil which not only accumulates and ruins all of your boots, it also coats the internals of your manifold as well as the intake runners of your cylinder heads- which keeping them spotlessly clean without RUNNING OIL IN THEM has GOT to have a positive effect on the engine, now that it isnt burning literal trash like a recycling bin.
from there, I Took the other end of the hose that goes to the plastic fitting on the valve cover. I disconnected the hose completely from the plastic fitting. I replaced the hose with (either 5/8 or 1/2" i will have to look again) hose with two hose clamps to firmly keep the hose attached to the 90 plastic fitting in the valve cover. I spent 2.00 on a new o ring for the plastic fitting. I then ran the NEW CCV hose off of the Valve cover to a 75.00 oil catch can (thank you ebay) which has a drain and a breather filter so the gases can escape while still serving as a catchcan for the blow by oil. I mounted it as far forward as I could to keep it away from the cab as to not get any excess fumes or smell.
Very simple, very clean, very easy project to tackle on your own.
Results: No more blown/oil soaked boots, cleaner intake manifold, cleaner intake runners on cylinder heads, less (NONE) trash oil/blowby being burned by the motor anymore.
Retail cost: 375.00 plus intallation
DIY Cost: 85.00 (catch can, hose clamps, O ring and hose.)
