anyways he gotten a new thermostat but left it out so it doesnt rust (might not be that big of a deal but what ever good idea) his operating temps seam supper wierd to me
trans: 155
water: 166
oil: 190

then again
trans:157
water:155
oil:193

uhhh anyone think that water is a bit low at cruise for a while after it warmed up??? isnt coolent supose to sit around 190 witch will tell that the delta is good but another drive he saw 160 coolent and 204 oil? again ok if coolent was at the operating temp but it sits at 160 and never goes up. i mena i figure its got no rad fluid in it but water should heat up the same right? makes no sence to me

If your running it without a thermostat seeing temps well below 190 is probably normal. The stock thermostat on a 6.0 doesnt open until about 190 i believe.

hmmm, confirms my suspicions... I've been running my truck with coolant temps like that since it got studded a few years back. At first I thought my gauge was messed up cause it will sweep all over, somedays it is up around 190 other days it runs in the 160's. So I thought the sender was going bad so in pure lazyness I opted to just worry about the oil temp instead, which seems pretty steady at 190, sometimes cooler in the 180's but never goes above 200 so I don't get worried.

When my oil cooler was going bad I could hit 230° oil temp with 200° water temp trying to hold 80mph down the highway, had to drop down to 70mph to keep the temps within 10° of each other.

Once you can monitor your temps and everything is running right you'll see the temps on oil and coolant can vary a lot. Just as long as the oil and coolant don't get more then 10 or 15 degrees apart. On a hot day pulling heavy I've still seen a 20 degree differential. Oil gets hot quick but when you back out of the throttle it will cool off really quick too if the cooler is good. Running empty in North Dakota when it's -20 it's hard for me to break 170 but when it's 107 outside and pulling heavy I've seen mine at 230. Go ahead and get you a new Stant 16 PSI coolant cap. They are less then $10 at a parts store. The stock Ford one is junk.

put the thermostat back in. 160 is waaay to cool for operating temp. diesel need heat to run properly, should be at least 190 if your running in cold weather, put a winter front on, and keep the temps up. Too cold coolant temps, fuel isn't completely burning.
