I have a question for all. Have you ever picked up a set of chrome door handle covers, scuffed them up and painted them to match your truck. I was thinking of picking up a set and trying it. I always wanted white door handles to match the truck. I've seen the smooth handles on ebay that are ready for paint, but i was thinking of just painting the chrome stick on ones. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I had my factory ones painted to match my truck. Three coats of paint will make the handles smooth.
Not a good picture but you get the idea. Also painted the mirrors and chrome grill.

i think painting the stock handles would be better in the long run... i would think the paint would have a hard time sticking to the polished SS... i went with a full billet polished handles on my rig.. -0 weather raises hell with the plastic stock handles...

I did my handles and rear tailgate handle with Automotive Touch up paint, primer, and clear. They came out perfect, but after a while i noticed soot would basically stain the clear coat on my tailgate handle. Ended up having them professionally done.

fwiw you can save yourself some money by just taking the handles apart and sanding them by hand. Your fingers will hurt for a couple days, but youll have smooth handles.

Im just going to buy the smooth set and keep my originals as extras since this is my daily driver. Ill order some Paint from my auto paint supply store. I wanted to try out my new HVLP Paint gun and do some things to my truck!

I did the same thing, but used smooth handles that I bought from rockauto. They turned out good but if the sun is shining directly on them you can tell they are darker than the rest of the truck. I'm not sure if that's because they were black to begin with or because the rest of my paint is 6 years old.

Some of that is from 6 years of sun, and some could be how much clear you used. Being my truck is white, matching the color was very simple.

How did you ever get the paint far enough inside the extension arms of the mirrors?
I just got a set of the new 08+ mirrors and wanna color match them to the truck...

You did a fantastic job btw!

So if they are darker does that mean I might have used too much clear?

Pretty much. The more clear you use the more it "pops". Makes the paint looks darker and glossier on a faded truck. From the pic, they came out great.

I just used rattler can on mine.

As far as the mirrors go, you can either take your chances by painting the mirrors with them in one piece all the way extended, or completely disassemble them and paint each piece with equal coats. The problem with painting extendable mirrors is that after sliding them in and out so many times, they eventually wear the paint down where the two posts slide. I had my mirrors painted without the extended posts having paint on them. Painting them can also make them stubborn to slide if you use many coats.

you can either paint the stock handles or you can order excursion door handles ( they're smooth already )...I had one of the chrome tailgate handles painted and it chipped away and looked like crap...do it the right way plus the chrome is bulky looking compared to stock.

You have any info on these billet handles? I'd like to see these.
