Talking about a fifth wheel here. I'm told that the best location for pin placement is about 3" in front of the rear axle. Assuming that you have adequate clearance between your rear bumper and the fifth wheel, what are the disadvantages of having the pin located more than 3" in front of the axle? For example, does ride suffer?

Just have to be careful not to have it overload the front axle. That would be the big factor.

Don't fifth wheel setups slide? I don't know, only ever had goosenecks.

Not the normal ones for pickups. You can get them but the slide mechanism is not for placement on truck but for aid in navigating turns with a short bed truck. They do not adjust like Large truck fifth wheels do and anchor to the same point as a gooseneck plate.

A buddy of mine has a slider. Not the one that pivots in turns, but rather the tracks have holes about 1" apart that run the length of the rails, and a release handle. You pull the release, and can slide the hitch forwards, or backwards, and then lock it in place. I would think that works perfectly fine.
