I am new here and thought i would see if anyone could help me out.
I have an 08 6.4 job1 that i am currently working on. I won't go into details but it needed an overhaul at only 100k due to weak cylinders across the board. I am using the redesigned Navistar pistons which are Mahle (224-3851). Anyhew, The piston rings that came with these are part number Navistar (7080201C91) or Mahle (S42246.020)
I don't consider myself a professional but I have done complete overhaul on a few engines over the years. I have checked gap on all rings but i am running into big problems with the inside spring in the oil ring, I have checked the gap on the oil ring itself and is fine but once i install the inner oil spring on piston and ring on top of that and using my lisle piston compressor, well i ended up cracking the 4th install. Worried about the other cylinders i pulled them back out and low and behold they are also cracked oil rings and i felt they went in nice and smooth. Does anyone been down this road know what i am talking about? I cannot get these oil rings installed as if they are oversize but they are all packaged together.
I am not too happy about it because i have to buy whole sets and they are not cheap. Has anyone had to cut a bit of the oil spring off to fit them? From what i know they are suppose to have outward pressure. I could never put these in the cylinders by themselves i couldn't compress them without cracking them they are so brittle.
Anyways sorry for the rambling as i want to give as much detail as i can.
