I want to eventually PTM, my front end and rear bumper. I got paint in rattle cans from a company online, but I won't have enough (it's also seems real expensive and I'm worried it won't match). Where do you guys go to get a good match of your existing color? Also, what is the best way to get the paint to adhere well to the chrome?

This is the company i got the rattle cans from:

Thanks
Bobby

If it was newer and in better shape I would bring it to a body shop. I just bought the rattle cans to fix my cab corners (that rotted out).

i have used them and its a pretty damn good match. take into consideration that you are adding fresh paint and comparing it to paint thats been on the truck for YEARS therefore it wont always be exact doing it yourself, but its closer than if you used autozone cans.

when using rattle cans, you have to sand sand and sand some more. WET sand to be clear. use something like 1500-2000 grit, soak it in water for a while before you get at it. do not use pressure, just lightly sand. you are only trying to smooth out the uneven spray of the rattle.

typically you will need 2 coats of primer, sanded between both sets. 4-6 coats of rattle can and sanding between each coat. do not apply heavy coats. if you miss an area lighter than the rest, just go over it on the next coat.

as far as chrome... strip it all the way down. its not fun, but you will get better results this way then any other. youre best bet would be to sell/trade your chrome bumper for a primered and go from there.

and make sure all sprays is from a minimum of 12" away from surface, typically at a 30^-45^ spray angle. keep an even pace going across the bumper, and make sure to over lap each pass a bit from the previous.

clear as mud?

if you do the patch, and notice it is off from the ext cab compared to the bed, mask off the truck and redo the whole 2tone. when you are done, wont be able to tell a color difference its all new. remember to take a 600 grit to the paint/clearcoat you are spraying over to get a good adhesion.

and remember to do the clearcoat the same steps as the color: wet sand, wet sand, and more wet sand, 3-5 coats light/med spray. good luck boss!

Sounds like a plan, thanks again. Also how much paint and clear do you think I need to do the bumpers, grille and cab corners?

I was thinking a quart of green and tan and a quart of clear.
