Got a call yesterday from a kid wanting to put a tuner on his new 6.0. I'm not real familiar with the 6.0s, so I need some advice on what to tell him to run it at. I told him to do studs, EGR delete, and oil cooler, but he wants to just fix it as they break. He wasn't even sure if he wanted to do intake and exhaust. Is anyone running H&S on a completely stock truck? How much can you push them?

I would think he would at least want to do an egr delete and exhaust just so he can keep his egts down running a hotter tune. Never used h&s though. When I first got my truck I welded up the egr cooler, removed the cat and muffler, then threw on my extreme street tune with no issues.

Or should I just go with something else for it? I've heard Matt has some good tunes for them and I'm sure IDP does too.

I've got idp for stock bolts and run street and haven't had any issues. But every truck is different. If it's a young kid i would start him with something small first. My truck will chatter the tires from a dig. But back on topic, you can't go wrong with any of the custom tuners as for h&s no personal experience with them

IDP and Matt doesn't tune for H&S...they use SCT. The Extreme Street tune an IDP's custom SCT tune. And as far as im concerned, SCT with custom tunes is the only way to go with 6L...nothing beats it.

Yea I meant should I go with different tuner. I've had lots of people say IDP is the way to go, but the guy wants the shift on the fly, which on my 6.4 I know is great.

Pretty good chance your buddy will toast his trans with the shift on the fly H&S. Shift on the fly tuners/modules suck big time. Tell him SCT with custom tunes. I run my ID xtreme-x tune as a daily driving tune...no need to shift on the fly here cause this race tune has very good street manners.

I guess I'm just trying to understand, but why are the so hard on the 6L and are just fine on the 6.4s. Both are 5r110s correct? Do they have a different TCM or something? I don't think he's looking to run a race tune, just something for towing but wants to be able to crank it when he's feeling cocky lol.

I run extreme street as my daily driver, with a 5in turbo back mbrp exhaust and if I hold her pegged for long periods my temps still get up to 1200 and that's with me watching it on the SCT dash pod.. I would say before any kind of mods.. at least ditch the cats, muffler, and up grade the down pipe to get better flow.. because as soon as he gets that extra power he is gonna wanna race people.. and the quickest way to kill a 6L is letting the egt's get to high.. I'm on 37's + 8in lift and I can spin them easy from a stop to about a 25 punch.. so it makes some power..

Why does he think he needs shift on the fly so bad? Most guys just leave a hot tune on for daily driving anyways and just reprogram to a tow tune as needed for towing.

I run innovatives extreme x as a daily driver. It is such a well balanced tune I don't have a need for anything else but my heavy tow tune. I have towed 7k with the extreme x without any egt issues. I only tow heavier than that a few times a year so if I switch tunes a few times a year I'm ok with that.

It's 2 minutes to reprogram an 05+ truck, and about 5 minutes to reprogram the 03/04 trucks, is it really worth destroying the trans?

And again, most of us never even reprogram, we load the hot tune and just run it. I maybe load my tow tune on 3 times a year when I'm hauling my camper, and then I reprogram once when winter rolls around to a more mild street tune for easy driving in the snow. That's it.

I don't think there is much more we can offer you, it sounds like you had your mind made up before you even asked the question. At the end of the day we can only offer advice, but the decision is yours/your buddy's.

Good luck!
