I have a new style oil seal with the wear ring built on to it. The manual shows a special tool to install the seal with and the seal comes with a black plastic ring for installiation. It looks like the its made to recess the wear ring part so the seal lip stays out flush with the cover Idk.
Anyone put one on yet? Without the special tool?

I put it in with a rubber hammer but just want to make sure its right before I put the trans in.

People have done it with a piece of wood and a mallet and slowly tapped the seal in trying to keep it as level as possible, but there is the chance to damage the seal that way, your options are 1) try the 2x4/mallet method 2)ask ford if you can borrow their tool or 3) buy or rent the offbrand 303-770 installer tool

I bought a tool, it does both 6.0 and 6.4. They go in about flush, but I wouldn't recommend doing it without a tool. You risk getting the wear ring crooked and ruining the seal.

thanks guys, does this look right? Whats throwing me off is what is this plastic ring used for with the tool? the way its made it appears it recesses the wear ring below the rubber part of the seal.
I very slowly tapped it on with a rubber hammer keeping it straight the whole time

Did you lube the inner and outer parts of the seal slightly? Like stated earlier that plastic ring is just used to seat against the seal to install it evenly, from the pics it looks fine to me

I did it with a straight piece of wood. You have to be PERFECT doing it though. Like brooksfruge said, lube it up. Take it slow and it will work.

I did lube it, it went in very easy also. I just want to make sure its in right as there is nothing to stop it from going too deep on either the seal or wear ring. I just put both flush with the case. It would suck to have to replace it right away, I wish I would have realized a tool was needed. I will have one soon but really want to get this thing together, but also want it right. Thanks guys!
