My new to me 03 excursion which is supposedly the same as a 250 has a dana 50. Other than the wheel bolt pattern, is there any downfall to putting in a dana 60 out of an obs (that I already own)?

Pretty sure the obs dana 60's are too narrow for a super duty Era truck.

:whs:

The spring perches are about an inch or more narrower per side.

I have several SD D60s in stock and would sell you one very reasonable. PM if interested.

from what I found so far...
OBS width is approx. 36.25
superduty is 38 inches
for a difference of 7/8 inch per side.
What practical options are there to make this work?

Not to be negative or side track, but have you had issues with your 50 to necessitate the change. We all talk bad about that axle, but seems like they are good enough for most applications.

the dana 50 has the exact same bearings, balljoints and outter knuckle as a superduty dana 60. if that is all you are worried about, i wouldnt touch it.

Agreed 100%. There are countless 99-01 F250s and 350s plowing, towing, etc.. beating the sh!t out of their straight axle D50s everyday, without issue.

Def not worth the swap. IMO.

It's not completely an upgrade. The OBS D60 has a much smaller tube than the SD50. You can swap the knuckles between both axles so either you end up with OBS knuckles, 8x6.5, good bearings and small steering linkage or the SD knuckles with unitbearings and 8x170. The only benefit is the larger ring and pinion and 35 spline inner shafts if that's what you are worried about breaking.

What did you break on the 60 last time? It might be something that can be upgraded.

If your 01 is a DRW they came with the dana 60 since 99. So I was told.
