New tailgate and a box side patch is not the worst but not the best. Middle of the road. If its stated there it will only go on the other side will do it soon. It spreads like herpes

Yep. When i bought my truck there was a little rust on the driver side rear fender and under the driver side ext. cab window. Now both fenders are rusty, both cab bottoms are rusty, tailgate is rusted out, front fenders are starting to rust, and the doors are starting to rust. Freaking sucks but normal here.

I'd say your best bet to fix it completely is find a CLEAN southern bed, strip it down and clean it up, seal it, paint it, and work on the inner fenders so they don't hold moisture. I've seen a bunch of trucks with rust on the seams of the new patch panels around here, either people don't seal it right or the seam attracts moisture or something.

New parts are always better. New boxes are big money though from what I've found. U can do entire box sides but there about 1500 bucks a side.

i paid 400 bucks for a used bed... it just had surface rust at the top of the fenders but the body shop cut it out and welded a new piece in to fix it.
I took some of that rustoleum bed liner stuff you can buy at wally world (rattle can) and sprayed the bottom of the doors and the rockers. it needs to be redone every so often but it seems to help.
after this winter i'm going to buy Raptor Liner. it's a bed liner that comes with a spray gun. it's enough to do a 8 foot full size bed for 103 bucks. I'm gonna do the whole bottom crown of the truck, inside the rear fender wells (up on the inside lip of the fender and all) and bumpers.
something else I've heard and seen work pretty good is used ATF. right before winter comes, get a pump sprayer from a local hardware store or wally world, go you a local service shop and ask them if you can take some used ATF. spray your entire frame, wheel wells, and underbody. its messy but the ATF will act like wax paper and keep the salt water from sitting and causing rust. it also helps existing rust from getting worse.

There's a place here in OH that sells rust free southern parts. Dundee Auto Parts their website is pickuptrucksalvage.com. I'm not sure if a complete bed comes with a tailgate or if you have to purchase it seperate but it would be much easier than having bedsides put on or having patches welded in. My 97 has had patches put in before I bought it and they're rusted through again. I've had it four years abd they were just blisters when I bought and now the holes are big enough to stick my hand through. I've patched and put complete sides on and nothing is 100% rust proof but if you're going to use any type of aerosol undercoating or even a thin film of atf do it after the new paint has had plenty of time to cure properly. If you do it right before it's painted it will wreak havoc on the fresh paint. It causes it to fisheye and look like crap. Good luck with it.
