Hey guys. This morning I went to start my truck and it seemed like the voltometer was a little higher but didn't pay attention so I cranked and white smoke but just kept cranking. Kept cranking and it finally started... well I drove it all day and I turned key to on and seen volts were up still and popped hood and didn't hear glow plugs whining. So I'm guessing it glow plugs or rely. I've got an ohm meter but what setting do I put it on and what's it supposed to read. Never tested one before so instructions would help...

Odds are it is your relay I doubt that it is the glow plugs themselves. Is your meter a digital one? If it is put the switch on a scale that will read at least 12 volts dc. Then turn the key to the on position and check both the large lugs on the relay with one side of the meter to a ground. You should see less that 0.3 volts difference between the two large lugs. So if one lug says 12.3 volts the other one to wards the glow plugs should read at least 12 volts.

Also make sure that the relay is coming on, you can do this by just listing to see if you hear it click on. If you are not sure of your testing abilities on the relay short the two large lugs with a set of jumper cables, pliers, or what ever else you can get across both lugs. Just be prepared for sparks. Keep the lugs shorted for a count to 30 and then try and start your truck. If it starts OK then it is the relay.

Ya, I'm sorry guys, I know you're tired of me. Not sure why all these things are happening so close but they are. And this is my first 7.3. I got my voltmeter which is the old one not digital and set it to dcV and the little numbers in that area were 10 50 250 1000 so I set it to 50 and with the key off I put it on and one came up, and the other terminal didn't read anything. Then I turned on key and the one that didn't read before came up and the side that did read before I turned on key didn't read anything. So I guess its the relay. What and where is best place to get one? I normally hear my glow plugs whine but I don't anymore.

Something is wrong here. You really need a digital volt ohm meter.
You can do this test with a regular meter

With the key off you should have battery voltage to one large lug of the glow plug relay since it is connected to the battery through a connection on the solenoid on the passenger fender and no voltage to the other one.

With the key on you should still have voltage on that same lug and the other one while the relay is energized.

Can you hear the relay click if someone turns the key on and off while you are listening under the hood?

If you do decide that it is the relay a quick replacement would be a GPR109 from NAPA for around $25.00 or so. For a long time soulition I went with a Stancor 586-902 which you can google to find the best price on one.

The Stancor is now called White-Rogers with the same part number. About $50 at the online electronic parts houses.

If I'm not mistaken and I'll go check again, with key off I'm getting power to the front large lug, and no power to the other. When I turn on the key, it is the opposite.. I really can't wait to order one so I will be at Napa today... I will go check again to make sure and let you all know.

Okay. I went and tested it and with the key on its not getting 12 v so relay is bad. So I went to Napa and they gave me gpr 110 and bit was $83.00!!!! So I called advanced andntheres is gpr 111 for $65.14.. so I took Napa one back. I would order one but can wait for shipping...

If you would of asked for a GPR109 at NAPA you would of gotten a relay for around $26.00, at least that is what they cost where I am located at.

I don't understand when you say that with the key on it is the oppisit. With a relay that it impossible. The relay should have power all the time to one large lug since it is connected directly to the battery. Then with the key on and the relay energized you should get voltage to the other large post which goes to the glow plugs and the one from the battery.
