just wondering, the only compound options i really know about are the 7000 dollar ones already set up or the mpd vgt-non vgt set up. wondering if i can build a compound set up for towing/daily driving. would want to stay between 600-700hp because i want to leave the bottom end alone. plan right now is a large single (mtw stage 3 or barder 3-4) and 190/100s. i would not want to go over 205s because i would really prefer to just keep my stock hpop. would just like to see if anyone has opinions on this, or knows of a good reliable set up? really really want reliability, and something that would be good for towing/dd. please enlighten me, let me know if there are set ups with my needs out there or if i should just do my large single.

What you want, is what compounds are all about. You enjoy the best of both worlds. You can definitely stay under 7000 for a compound setup, granted you won't need any other supporting mods. Get yourself two good chargers, size them accordingly, gate accordingly, and make sure your LP oil drain is properly sized. If you do all the above, it should last you a long time. The high pressure on a compound setup, does not work nearly as hard compared to a single setup, which is another benefit. Plus, expandability down the road is much easier. You will have larger options to choose from, knowing you can spool them. 190/100s and a small compound setup would be fun, and would be able to tow very well.

Odawgs setup is what I would do. Barder 68 with 175s, he just made over 600 with above setup and all supporting mods.

Comes down to how much you tow, reliability seems good but hasn't exactly been proven.

that is exactly what i wanted to hear!

This went way over my head though, when it comes to picking the turbos and gate, i just have no idea where to start. my concern with this would be buying the wrong parts and wrecking them or others. i dont want to bite off more than i can chew i guess.

yes, this is an option for me, just wondering if the compounds would bring more reliability and be better for towing. but those are great numbers, especially with 175s

i tow 12000lbs on the weekends, not really long distances, about 30 miles each way saturday and sunday nights. maybe a couple of 100-400 mile trips a couple times a year, but not too often. the issue with my short distance weekend towing is that a good chunk of it is city with stoplights every other block, dont want to be sitting there waiting for the single to spool ya know.

Exactly. You can size your chargers small, or use ball bearing Garrett units (They are the most reliable in comparison to Journal bearing Borg Warner units) which will make it tow like a dream. Hopefully Ivan, Shawn, Moroni, or Kubik will chime in at some point. They have the most experience trying different 6.0 compound setups, as well as the most experience putting them through the test in towing conditions. Compounds is the way to go.

You can build a set with a 62 and 74,75, or 78 that will still tow great, make great power, and run cool. You can pick those turbos up pretty cheap from borg warner as well and they take a beating. A lot of how a setup runs is in the tuning...obviously. Hell I tow my 6k lb boat around with a 63/80 setup and decent sized hybrids and can't break 1050 degrees with my tow tune.

You don't count.

Lance has never pushed his pedal passed 1/4 throttle....

But his advice is pretty dead on

I've driven MPD's vgt/s472 compound setup and that is AWESOME. Would make for a great DD/toy/tow pig/whatever. Also have driven Mark's truck with the 66/80 compounds and have to say after driving this it made me dislike my big single a little more. Either way, compounds are awesome, just size them to your application and have fun!

Do you have any info on mpds set up? Are they gunna start selling it soon? They got a price? I thought they used some pretty big injectors for that set up but not sure.

Get in touch with them about getting that setup. I honestly don't know. IIRC (but don't quote me) I'm pretty sure it had 225/100's in it. Mike and I drove it to Georgia and back one weekend and I don't think I saw over 1050* EGT's the entire time...

I've messaged mpd a couple of times but just don't seem to want to give info out about it. Maybe still to early in the build, not sure.

i tow my drag truck in a 32ft enclosed trailer with 205s and my compounds. i dont recommend doing anything to your truck if your going to tow unless, you know your way around a toolbox and you know these trucks well enough. the more you push it, the sooner you will be on the side of the road. towing is hard on these trucks. i carry a toolbox full of parts, oil, tools, ect.. with me all the time. i dont usually need them but i keep up on checking over my truck pretty regularly. not to mention i tow another 6.0 behind it so i have anything i need. just make sure you dont go large on the injectors, you wont be happy when you cant hook up to a trailer.
