Ok guys after about 20 miles if driving the other day I noticed your standard burnt rubber smell while driving and thought it was someone else until I turned and it stuck with me. Pulled over, and there was white smoke coming from rear passenger wheel well. I couldn't tell where exactly.... I was a block from home so I drove it home and by the time I got there the smoke had stopped. All my gauges where fine, oil, tranny fluid fine... Belt is fine.... Smell seemed to come from under the hood but the smoke came from that wheel well...

Also note I've only had my trans temp on for a week and in that week it ran on avg 130 and it got up to 160 that day.

After a while of poking around with not much auto experience I came to conclusion maybe my e brake was on while driving.... Next day same smell but no smoke and I'm positive e brake was off...

Where should I start diagnosing this?

Could be a bad axel seal or a brake cylinder leaking. Id pull the wheel and check every thing.

Also may want to check things near your exhaust (mudflaps, rubber hangers, inner fender trim, brake lines, etc).

Just a thought, buddy's truck has melted a few mudflaps and it's sure noticeable when they start to get warm.

Oh an im on my phone so I can't see what truck or year but if it has rear disc and you don't see anything wrong. Pull the dust boot on the piston little and see if fluid comes out. Sometimes the seal will start to go but the boot will be fine and hold fluid in there till the brakes are pressurized. Or you could have someone pump on the brakes before you pull the caliper begot you take it off to see if it squirts out.

check the caliper slides and piston movement of that caliper. sounds like a stuck caliper to me....assuming you have an SD since this is in the SD section.

oh and fill out your signature so there is no confusion

Ya I'll fill out the sig when I get on a computer.

New symptom tho (still haven't been able to find time to pop off the tires.)

On the way home from work today the truck was simply not wanting to shift into second, at just about every light I would get up to about 20 mph then not go any faster and if I gave it more throttle RPM would just go up.... Then I would let off the throttle and it would kick in a few seconds later, sometimes I had to rev it, let of rev let off etc to get it to kick in.

Then my o/d off light started blinking on me and pushing the button in D N or P did nothing. I shut the truck off and turned it back on and the light wasn't blinking....

What the hell is going on!

Heres the specs

01 250 7.3l with dp f6, and isspro gauges. Note this shifting issue happened in all different modes of my chip

If you plan on keeping this truck for any amount of time, I would recommend buying a scanner of some sort. Most guys around here use Auto Enginuity.

I am not sure if the scanner AutoZone uses will read trans codes. I work at an AutoZone here in California but by law, we cannot read codes for customers. They must buy the scanner themselves. In every other state, AutoZone will read codes for you for free. But as I said, I'm not sure if the scanner they use will read trans codes.

1-2 shift, sounds like a possible mechanical diode failure, 2001 model, really makes me think that too...BTS time.

On the smoke, sounds like a caliper or slide pin issue. If the breaks were dragging enough, they could possibly cause issue with trans shifts, but they would have to be pretty bad.

Ok well I'll put that scanner at the Btm of the list but it's going on the list lol. I'll call autozone today to see if they can check it out.

What does bts time mean?

Another note.... I haven't had the problem today but- my o/d button does nothing when I push it....

Hopefully this is all a cheap fix

Diesel truck and cheap fix dont go in the same sentence. If gour trans needs a rebuild you're gonna be lookin at 4000+.

BTS= Brian's Truck Shop

It is a brand of transmission. In most peoples opinion, they are the best.

And Autozone scanners will not read hardly anything on a diesel truck. Need to move AutoEngineuity up higher on the list.

Sounds like your tranny is taking a dump all over you.

Rule #1 - Don't buy a diesel if you can't afford to fix a diesel.

Rule #2 - Buy Auto Enginuity. . Auto Zone will probably say there were no codes.

It's on the way... Hope to god it ain't the tranny.... Ya I have the money to fix it.... I just really wanted a lift and tires! And I may have gotten screwed, ya I bought it with high mileage... But the guy was a high ranking marine who was with maintenance battalion... Here I am the moron thinking a guy that's been in for 20 wouldn't screw over a guy who just got back from his third combat deployment....
He also told me it hadn't been upgraded ever.... Every time I install something I find old gauge mounting holes and stuff. Guess theres only one way to learn about it... Least I now am beginning to know what to look for next time..

The 3rd party mechanic who checked it out was also "astonished it was in such great condition" - guess he figured he could get my business real soon haha. Glad to see all we fight for equates to nothing when we get back home and deal with those who "support us"

Tho I haven't done much auto work I am very mechanically inclined... Can one buy rebuild kits and build themselves a strong tranny that will hold up to a built truck? I'm sure I can find a place to rent the larger tools I need and we even have a fully equipped garage in base that's 2 bucks an hour for use....

I've asked a buddy of mine who is still deployed that builds diesels and he said the one thing he hates to mess with are trannys, just wanted a second opinion.
