Starter?

My wife just tried to start the truck while it was running. Now the starter just spins and makes a terrible noise. I'm hoping it's broken teeth on the starter and not the flywheel. Opinions? 2003 7.3.

Only one way to find out for sure, pull it.

Yeah, I was gonna do that when I got home from work. Good news though. My dad went to pick up the wife and kids where it happened. He looked under the truck and saw a bolt on the ground. Turns out, one bolt was missing and the one on the ground must have been about to fall out and when she tried to engage the starter, it must have knocked it out. He put it back in and it started right up.

Not uncommon. Put some loctite on those bolts.

Bolts came out all the time on a buddies 97. Would always Retorque them when changing the oil. My moms excursion almost dropped the db starter in a rest area, l one bolt was holding it on by a turn.

Needless to say we loctited those little effer's to all hell.


My 2000 has never backed off. Odd.

I got home and tightened them up and all is well. Next oil change I think I will add a drop of Loctite though. Good preventative measure. I would have never thought it so common but I guess the vibration of a diesel...
