My steering has been getting harder and harder, and now it intermittently binds, feels like the tilt is coming loose and has noise like the clock spring is getting torn up. I haven't been into a ford column yet, are there commonproblems I should look for? Thanks.

there are tons of threads out there on the rebuild process, that failure is pretty common and bearing kits are available from ford.
I'm sure your bearings are out. There was also a color picture write up either here or psn and step by step instructions, but its been a while since I've seen them.

good luck.

well, after some digging I did find enough articles to get it torn down and reinstalled, looks worse than it is. but the wheel turns sooooo smooooth now I wish I had done it a while ago. Night and day difference driving it.

definitely pulled the column out of the truck, had trouble understanding some of the written instructions I found on the net but once I got it farther apart the instructions made more sense. now that I've had one apart they don't seem near as complicated to me. people really complained about getting the tilt mechanism back together with how much spring tension there is on it. but I mounted the column in a vise then just used leverage and it went back together pretty easy. and as I said before, it is night and day difference in the steering, I thought I had a ball joint binding or something but it was all in the column. the column had problems since I bought the truck and I didn't realize it. that was 40k ago.

You need a friend to help you compress the tilt assembly to reassemble or a pair of Vise-Grip welding tongs worked for me.
