Is there anyway to bench test a trans to see if it will shift and run properly? visual inspection? Electrical test?

No. You will need to get a load on it to determine any of that.

Thats not true. NADP has a trans dyno 
But no not in your backyard setup. Stuff it in and hope for the best lol.

And you do that with a trans dyno. A really good trans shop might have one, and for a little $$ might test one for you.
There's one possibility if they are near you.Thats not true. NADP has a trans dyno
