So, i posted a thread a few weeks back asking what kinda trans i should run, that will hold high horsepower (800+). Im 18 years old, i bust my ass to pay for a diesel truck and everything done to it. I hate driving my beater home from work everyday and seeing my truck sit in the driveway. So, to get it moving i went back and actually THOUGHT about stuff that coulda broke. I was hot lapping it at the drag strip. Made 15 runs on a saturday and the trans said SEE YA on sunday. Im thinking i got negative pressure in my trans pan because it blew my dipstick out and fluid hosed down the inside of my engine bay. Could it be the Torque converter? Another thought i had was the input shaft seal let go because there was fluid everywhere, however i can't find a hole in the case (granted i haunt pulled the trans yet) but the bottom of the case looks fine. I know stock Tq converters in the 5r's don't like brake boosting and i was launching from 15-20lbs of boost in 4 high all day long. I have NO gears at all. The other thing, it didn't make any noise when it broke. I was going probably 60 down the highway, all of a sudden it felt like i was pressing on the brake slowly but my foot was still in the accelerator and then all of a sudden nothing. Didn't hear ANY noises, didn't even have the radio on. Thoughts?

Sounds like a smoked converter, mine did nearly the same thing. I believe they're only around 300 new from Ford

So say it is the converter, i pull the trans replace the converter, throw it back in and DONT take it to the track. Have i wrecked anything else? is it a good chance my clutches are shot and the pump is gone too?

Did you try putting fluid back into it and seeing what it does>??? Or visibly looking for the actual leak>???
If it has no fluid in it, it isn't going to move...

I couldn't find a leak anywhere but what I think came out of the fill tube for the trans. As I said it blew my dipstick out and hosed my engine bay with trans fluid so I must have gotten negative pressure in my pan, but why would that have happened? Another thing I didn't realize is I added a quart of ford trans fluid that wasn't Mercon SP or LV. Could this be part of my problem? (this was hours prior to it blowing when I added the wrong trans fluid)

Negative pressure in the pan will suck the dipstick in, not blow fluid out.

The only ways that I have seen fluid come out the dipstick is when the trans was either overfilled or had water in it.

Adding the wrong fluid won't make it come out the dipstick. It will destroy your solenoids, but not cause this.

You say fluid actually came out of the dipstick? A long time ago, I severely overheated an E4OD transmission and it did almost exactly what you described. After letting it cool down, I refilled the fluid and it behaved fine for another 20k miles til I sold it. If I was you, the first thing I would do is put more fluid in it and see if she moves. If it does, there is still a chance you may need new clutches or that your torque converter is going out, but you should be able to baby it until you have the cash to rebuilt it. If it doesn't, well, you are pretty much in the same place you are now.

To answer your original question, you can go a few different avenues. Buy a trans already built, or buy the parts and rebuild it yourself, whether you send it to a shop you trust or physically do it yourself. I opted to find a shop. If you are like me, your want to do it once, and move on to the next mod. So if you have to save for a few more months, do it.

Elite builds an solid running tranny at a good price. Keep in mind, a trans that will withstand an 800 hp motor, is going to run you at least 7-8k, and expect more. Suncoast is popular, but can be super pricey when you get into high HP levels.

Warren builds a solid trans that i have heard wonderful things about as well.

Heres what i did...

I studied, studied then studied some more. I ended up finding a transmission guy who was a smaller business in my area, that had built transmissions for people i know. Then i called him. Told him i wanted to order the parts, and have him install them. He then found the parts, researched them, and actually found the kits cheaper. We negotiated a cash price (saved me $800), and i dropped the truck off. When he got the parts, i went down and confirmed the part numbers, and gave him the go ahead. When he tore the trans down, i went down there and inspected all the old parts. He built and installed within a day of getting the parts.

I went with elite's HD rebuild kit, their billet input shaft, their intermidiate shaft and a trans star triple disk converter. I was going to go with the precision industries stallion, but i talked to some people who run the trans star converter in their race cars, and they love em. I went with a 1400 stall, and couldnt be happier.

Good luck, research is your friend.
