What all is involved in changing from plain power mirrors to mirrors with power/heat and turn signal?

Also, i t needs new lense covers for the turn signal. Ford just told me it doesn't exist and I have to buy the whole back side? Or something and its $200 a piece.

OH PLEASE tell me this is not true!! LOL
If you can find a buddy willing to help compare the harness plugs. You may be able to wire a separate switch for the mirror heat.

You'll want a switch for your mirror heat. Mine are auto and it just bakes mud to the mirror

There is no need to insult me, my career or the military with that comment. Im sorry I don't know everything there is to know about these trucks like you do obviously. I haven't taken the old mirror out and haven't pulled one out in these trucks before so I didn't know if all the wiring was there from the factory or if I needed to rewire or get some sort of adapter or another harness. So please keep your comments to yourself if they aren't helpful. That was just uncalled for and I don't appreciate it.
I didn't ask HOW to wire them did I? I just wanted to know if it needed to be.

haha of course we get made fun of being an et, comes with being the nerds of the ship. if it was a joke, thats fine. just didnt seem like it. i took it like he was saying im an idiot for not automatically knowing how all there is to know about these mirrors and he hopes im not an electrician for the military because of it.
i just wanted to know from people who have done the job, what needs to be done, before i dig into it and realize i need something i dont have.

Zac I'm quite certain you have run across quite a few people who don't know their job. If you can't laugh then I can't help your lacking a sense of humor. During my 20+ military career I got served plenty and served up plenty.

I did the same on my truck. My truck had the plain tow mirrors. I bought a set of heated turn signal mirrors and they plug right into the factory harness. The plugs are the same. No need to splice or cut anything. unhook the old ones and plug the new ones in and they'll work.

thanks thats what i wanted to know. and good to hear. dont like splicing if i dont have to.
do you know of any way to get just the light/lense without buying the whole back cover? amber, not smoked or recon

Nope, you have to buy the whole back cover. I want to get the chrome back covers w/ light for my 2004. I was told a while ago that I could get the chrome covers from another year and they would fit, but I don't remember what year it was anymore.

yes you can remove the amber lense if you wanted to replace with a recon one...I've done it with mine. I've got the recon clear LED marker lights on my mirrors. There are plastic tabs that you need to press inorder to pull the back cover off of the mirror. But you have to use a screw driver and go in from the front behing the mirror lense.

here's the directions from recons site on how to take the back of the mirror off
Instructions for Part # 264120BK & 264120CL for 2003-2007 Trucks
1. Behind the larger mirrors there are 3 clips holding the cover on to the mirror.
2. There are two upper clips and one lower clip that must be unclipped for the mirror
cover to release. ***PLEASE USE CARE WHEN PROCEEDING WITH THE NEXT
TWO STEPS SO YOU DO NOT BREAK THE FRAGILE PLASTIC TABS/CLIPS
WHICH HOLD THE MIRROR COVER IN PLACE*** - (You will have to move the
mirror side to side and up and down to gain access to the clips. The upper clips are
located about 3 inches from the top of the mirror. The one lower clip is on the side
closest to the truck and about 6 inches below the upper clip.)
3. Using a long flathead screwdriver, push down to remove the clips. (You may need a
small flashlight to see behind the mirror itself.)
4. The mirror cover will now release from the mirror.
5. Unplug the wiring harness from the light and remove the cover and light assembly
from the truck.
6. Squeeze the two butterfly clips on the inside of the light and push outwards. (Careful
not to break the three guide clips on the outer side of the light.)
7. Replace the old lights with the new RECON lights in reverse order to re-install.
8. Turn the truck on and check for proper operation of both blinkers and running lights.
Instructions for Part # 264140BK & 264140CL for 2008-2010 Trucks
To remove your factory turn signal lens you will need to locate the release clip behind the larger,
top mirror of your 2008-2010 Ford Superduty. The clip is physically behind the mirror on the
horizontal edge, just adjacent to the lens.
1. Push the top, inside of the mirror so that there is a large gap by the bottom, outside
edge.
2. You should see the release clip now and you simply need to depress it using a flat
head screwdriver. This will release the light from the mirror.
3. Remove the bulb sockets from the factory lens and then remove the bulbs from the
sockets.
4. Insert our plugs into the vacant sockets and snap your new RECON LED mirror lights
back into the mirror.
5. Test the running lights and the turn signals to ensure the plug is inserted correctly
before snapping the RECON lens onto the housing.
6. You will need to find a place to accommodate the wire inside the housing before you
snap the lens on.
