Truck in my signature.
Towing a heavy bumper pull Toyhauler, 25k gross.
Minimax & gearhead tunes.
Running 70-75 on cruise. No, I'm not going to slow down.
Have it set to the tow tune (lowest level) and am still spiking EGTs on hills when it downshifts to 4th and is reving about 3k rpm.
EGT's spike and the MM starts chirping. Defuling I assume.
MPG is about 8 :(
Truck pulls every hill between SC and OH no problem, though I'm pretty sure it's floored.

I'd prefer to run the 'street' tune as I feel it has quite a bit more power, but it really sends the EGTs up fast then.

Truck has 55kmi on it so I'm not 'yet' due for a turbo. And funding isn't in place for that upgrade yet.

New intercooler? Or won't that make enough of a difference?

Yea, I know I need to do the intercooler tube soon before it blows and leaves me on the side of the road.

Would a freer flowing intake like the No Limit help anything or just make it worse?

Suggestions in the reasonable $$ range for this?

Towing, high EGTs on a hill. MM & Gearhead

My Toyhauler and truck combined is about 21K and with the No Limit Intake and Intercooler I want to say I dropped my EGT's by damn near 100F. I haven't been able to break 1300 towing my trailer on the hills where I live but there aren't any really long steep hills around here. I too run my truck in tow mode most of the time actually. The real solution is a 15 Turbo but like you said and I'm in the same boat the cost factor. At the same time the Intercooler and intake is damn near the same cost too...

If your intake temps are getting warm like your EGT's are, your intercooler pipe is bound to leave you stranded soon.

Any airflow "mod" will help drop egts

What EGT do you see towing?

I'd do a no limit intake ASAP get that thing to breathe LOL.

How are egts that bad in a cr truck with that kind of headflow?

Im assuming the op already has intake, exhaust covered.

You think you are under geared for 35s on a towrig?

I ran huge tires on my 7.3 and it wasnt ever a huge issue but once i added more and more fuel it got hotter. I think to just tow and nothing else staying at stock size or a 33 on larger wheels is the ticket.

You should toss the stock rubber on and see what happens.

Have Matt make you a dedicated set of tow tunes. Keep the boost down around 25 and let it rev a little with some good timing.

And of course, get an H&S intercooler pipe. You're going to be a mad SOB when that thing let's go during a hair pin turn mountain climb.
