Has anyone used u-bolts instead of welding the traction bracket to the axle?

That's how mine are mounted now. I have OUO bolt on bracket. No issues

The bolt on OUO bracket hooks into the spring ubolts to prevent rotation. Otherwise it wouldn't work.

I'm looking to go straight to the axle not the spring mount, I do like the ouo design though.
