FWIW, I've heard some negative opinions on Royal Purple but I recently changed my and used Mobil One. It's easier to find and cheaper than the RP.

I run mobile 1 for the motor but this is going into the transfercase.I never heard these negitive opinions on royal purple other than it is not cj-4 rated.I used their gear oil for years it works great, don't need a friction modifer with it for locking diffs either.

It looks like trans fluid but it was cheaper so I went ahead and got the right stuff. When I asked around the dealer I was told they use trans fluid if they don't have the other stuff but nobody could tell me what the difference was.

I was referring to the Mobile One ATF. I may not be understanding your last sentence but I would not use a gear oil in the transfer case.

after replacing my transfer case a transmission builder told me to use the mopar tranny oil, it stands better up against the head. 20k later, my fluid still looks like the first day and it works great so far, even with negative 15-20 on the thermometer.
