truck through two codes today for cylinder contribution/balance faults....P0278(cylinder #6) and P0284(cylinder #8). Truck was cold when started, idled a bit higher than normal then idle stared to rise on it's own all the way to 1000-1100ish and got kinda choppy/rough. I turned truck off, deleted the codes and started truck back up to idle for a bit. Checked codes again and this time only through code for P0278(cylinder #6). Deleted that code again and started back up...idled fine this time. Took for a drive...all seemed good, checked for codes and there were none this time. Gonna keep an eye on it and see if they keep popping back up. If they do, i'm gonna yank all of them and send them out to have them checked out. Now, if it's a contribution/balance code...does that pretty much narrow it down to a rubber o-ring or copper washer? What else can through contribution/balance codes....can a faulty spool valve or wiring(injector harness or injector plug) cause a contribution/balance code?

Any of them could cause a balance/contribution code. Normally if its a wiring issue it will throw a code for open/low though. Would lean more towards spool valve if it was me though.

I believe a sticky spool valve can throw a cont code. I know mine has before. once the oil is warm and everything is running smoothly, it wont trip a code any more. mine runs like sh*t when cold now. misses, no power, codes, etc until its nice and warm. my injectors are old and need a refresh somethin fierce.

Yeah that's what i was thinking. Damn, and i've been running 5w-40 synthetic for like ever and even started using rev-x the day i put the injectors in. Think i might change the oil and add some more additive if it keeps doing this.

It's probably because you don't drive your truck enough so everything gets all gummed up. :poke: LOL LOL LOL J/k Chris. I hope you get it figured out.

haha...yeah probably. It's been sitting for a couple days since i started it. Finally started it up this afternoon being 64* outside..fired right up and idled beautiful with no codes...so idk. The other day when it idled rough and threw the codes it was probably around 70-75 out.

Mine has been doing something similar. I am getting a low contribution/balance code for #5 more regularly recently. I am interested to see what you can find out about yours. I plan on running some tests on it soon to narrow it down, but I am thinking spool vavle as well. Good Luck

Given the symptoms and 6.0 injector spool valve history, my money is on spool valve sticktion.. If you have a block heater, plug it in for an hour before you try and start it cold, It probably will start perfectly..

wouldn't matter cause it idled fine yesterday when it was colder than two days previous when it acted up. Truck was cold this morning when I started it again...idled perfect. When it acted up, truck was cold and it was 70-75* outside...so go figure. Been idling perfect every time it's been started ever since.

If that's the case, I would check your FICM voltage key on and while cranking, it could be the culprit..
