I have a 94.5 RCLB 5 spd 4x4 with a crappy no name chip on my truck that his been on since before I bought it. 3 years ago plus.

But here is what it is doing. I will be driving (anything from cruising down the highway at 70mph to going up my drive at 5mph) and the truck will just shut off. If I am doing 70 its like the truck will take a little jerk forward and then slow down. But the motor is still turning cause I am still in gear and my RPM's say 0. So I pull over and start the truck. It turns over a few extra times and then fires right up like nothing happened.
What could this be?

First off when it shuts off and you are trying to restart it is the tach moving? If not it may be the cps. Also you might want to remove the chip and see what happens. One other spot that will cause this to happen is if the fuel heater in the bottom of the filter housing is shorting out. Usually this will blow a fuse but sometimes it will just be loose and not a direct short and not blow the fuse.

I thought about the CPS. Is there a way to check it without the truck dying again?
Im not sure if the tach moves when I first turn the key but I know it will move after the key has been turned for 3 seconds and the truck fires up.
The only thing that makes me think its not that is that it will fire right up afterwards.

The fuel heater in the bottom of the fuel filter that sits center top of the motor?

Yes that is the heater.
Another thing to check would be the relays in the undrehood fuse panel. The big square ones are magnetically actuated. I had a bad one and it would short out and cause my truck to jerk or die and not start. I replaced them all and it stopped.
Easiest way to check them is take re arrange them and see if it stops.

The cps is a quick and easy replacement anymore. It should be less than $25.00 from the dealer. If you do decide to replace it you need a 6 pt 10mm socket and not a 12 pt. The bolt is going to be tough to break loose and all the 12 pt socket will do is round off the bolt head and then you will have other problems.
