True Trac, Positraction or rebuilt Ford LS

Need to have my rear axle rebuilt and figure while it's apart I should do something about the one wheel peel. Stock LS used to work back when I got the truck with 31K on it. It stopped working so great after about 60K.

I spend 90% of my time on pavement with the rest mixed gravel roads and grass fields. I tow frequently esp in summer and average about 10000# but at times push 22000# and the tongue weight does get up there.

I like the True Trac but have some concerns about its bolts backing out, possible issues with turning corners while loaded heavy and how long will it stand up to heavy towing. Eaton also says no to synthetic oil with this unit and I do not want to give up my Schaeffers 75W-140.

Eaton's Posi is something else I've been looking at. Seems like a properly built LS unit. How well can it hand heavy loads?

Or should I just rebuilt the stock LS? Like I said it did work pretty good, just didn't last long.

Price difference between the True Trac and Posi is only $50. I am not looking to go with a locker and a selectable locker is out of my price range.

I need to make a decision this weekend and order the parts Monday. Thoughts from those who have been there and done that?

Ive got tru trac in my 350 pull heavy with it a lot. Havent had any problems. It is a little sketchy when the roads are icey or there is snow, but man can i do donuts.

When i had the pinion bearing go out on my rear end i took it to a very good 4 wheel drive shop and i told the i wanted something that would lock in and stay in and it had to be bulletproof they told me hands down go with the tru trac.

I've never heard of the bolts backing out because of the TrueTrac. Where does it say no synthetic oils can be used? I've been running synthetic in my diff for 2 years now with the TrueTrac. LOL

Factory LS is a waste of time and money IMO.

Truetrac gets my vote.

It's stood up to the high power levels for me and quite a few others. I've never heard of anyone having a problem with it.

Trutrac here also front and rear. No real heavy towing, but about 20K miles on them and I would not run anything but full synthetic in my diffs.

Google True Trac Failure I read of at least 3 times this happened. Two were from a while ago but one was recent. Seems rather isolated thought.

Right on their FAQ page "A quality petroleum/mineral based oil works best in the Truetrac units. We do not recommend synthetic oil. Friction additive/modifier is not required."

Although reading the rest of their FAQ they don't want synthetics used with any of their other products either. I find this very odd. It's probably a non issue as like you I've read about people using syn with no issues.

Installation errors can play a big part of that. Make sure the bolt holes in the ring gear are dry and clean. Use the right amount of loctite. Also Dana 70 ring gear bolts is another trick. I can't see how those issues relate to the TruTrac itself IMO.

The bolts that were backing out were the bolts that hold the carrier together not the bolts that bolt the ring gear to the carrier.

If I remember correctly it was a big issue with the Truetracs build for the Nissan Titan trucks but did show up in other applications as well.

true trac ftw man!! lots of guys on here test them on a daily basis... thats what i have. i run amsoil 75-140 in mine.. changed it at 30k just to see how it looked and it oil looked bran new.. not a bit of wear, and i flog the chit out of my truck on a daily basis.

When properly installed, a TruTrac will last a very long time. I'm coming up on 100k miles and still love mine. Never know it's there until I need it. My truck has 4.30's in it and the everyday weight is upwards of 10k lbs.

If you want another option other than the trutrac, check out the auburn ls. That is what I put in, have a local guy that has had more issues with the trutrac than the auburn. So that is what I went with.

I think you would be fine with the trutrac, just remember the truck will handle differently in the rain, snow, and ice... LOL sometimes I like it and other times I don't... LOL

Ended up with a True Trac for $531. I see they are made in Taiwan but workmanship looks very good. Have about 200 miles on it so far and think I made a good choice.

Where are you located? I need my rear rebuilt but not sure who to trust with it.

I live in Mocksville. Oliver's Driveshaft in Winston-Salem did the work for me. I asked around the local 4x4 community and this place came highly recommended.

East Coast Gear in Raleigh was also highly spoken of.
