Turbo may be on it's way out

Well after 281,XXX miles of hard use I noticed my turbo is developing a high pitch whistle at cruising speeds. The turbo on my truck has always been a real loud whistler. I punched it the other day to get around some slow traffic, and the whistle was like nothing I have ever heard from it. There is no shaft play what so ever, and the compressor wheel looks fine. Could I just be imagining things? Or could it be on the exhaust side?

On a side note it has turned off cold for the last two weeks (in the mid 20's to low 40's). Just wondering what you guys think.

does it have a supercharger whine to it? cause mine does and idk if its going too

Another sign to look for is oil in the turbo you could have a seal out… also look for boost leaks good luck

If there is no shaft play I would be thinking along the lines of what Matt posted.

The truck does not have an intercooler, so the only boots I have are on the intake plenums. Those boots were replaced about two months ago, and I have checked those. When I replaced the boots I also replaced that o-ring off the turbo to the intake. There is no oil leaking from the seals. It does have that supercharger whine to it. I'm just plain stumped. Maybe it's just another one of those noise my truck is developing in its old age. I'll check again for boost leaks though.

well i looked at mine and im missing some pieces off the fins of the compressor side. so im pretty sure that is where my supercharger whine is coming from.

It's unplugged and on a switch. I only flip the switch for warmup and it just idles. It hasn't made any funny noises in the past few days. It still spools fine and gets it.

What would be more cost effective: Rebuilding my stocker, or finding one?

I think I might have a couple stockers around here somewhere. I will check in the morning for you if you'd like and make sure they are good. I know I have a couple bad ones too so i want to check first.
