Turbo screech

Hi all,
Long story short, on the way home from work, my engine starts making this gawd aweful screech/whistle sound.
After doing some research on this site, I disconnected the VGT actuartor on the HP turbo, and BINGO, no more screech.
However, if I move the VGT lever manually to the closed position, the noise comes back.
So my question to those in the know is...
How bad is it?
Do I need a new turbo, or can it be repaired?
Does it sound like it is even repairable, or is the core value zero now?

Thanks in advance.

Bill.

BTW, I am not a newbie here, but I had to re-register to be able to post, cuz I had zero luck contacting a mod or administrator.

If it's a squeal your hearing with the vgt closed most likely you have a exhaust leak pre turbo. Check your up piped and manifold gaskets first, look for soot anywhere it shouldn't be. If you do need a turbo yes your cores are worth something, iirc on reman turbos it's like 300$.

Thanks for the input.
I'll do an in depth inspection this weekend and see if there is any sign of soot.

I wasn't sure if there was any actual metal-to-metal contact going on with the VGT closed.

It seems to run ok tho, just slower to accelerate and noticable smoke at light throttle inputs.

I may try and wire the VGT halfway closed and see if drivablity improves much.

I'll let ya'll know what happens.

Billl.

I rebuilt my turbos for $200. Bought a low pressure and high pressure Rotomaster rebuild kit and did it myself. Not too terribly difficult. Check your rotor shafts and if you have excessive play in them, then that may be causing the problem.
