I have 2011 f250 160k, d-leted, original turbo and just noticed in the past couple weeks a lack in power and decrease in mpg. Today I checked the oil and noticed a strange tinking noise coming from the turbo. Not a squealing or whining but a noise similar to a tinking or pinging. Totally sporadically. I gave it some gas to try and see if it would do it right after and it would but sporadically. Would this mean I have stuck vains or maybe a bad wastegate? Anyone have a similar problem. It definitely drives very sluggishly lately. Had oil hanged recently and use Archoil oil friction modifier and their gas additive.

Really the only way to tell is pull the intake off and check the turbo see if it has some end play in the shaft. You will know right away if it's bad or not. Especially if it has enough play in it that the fins are touching the housing. My guess is that it's on it's way out. Especially since your mileage and performance has decreased. Just a guess though.

it sucks when the problem is inconsistent. but yes, it could be stuck vanes , are your boost numbers high or low when its sluggish ? if the vanes are stuck closed it wil be high , with high bp . if wg is stuck open, boost and response will be awful and low. as well have you puled the downpipe off the exhaust housing to look for any oil ? or the intake off the compressor housing to see if oil is there ? gimme a call tomorrow and i'll try to help you diagnose.

The first archoil oil additive I used was about 9 months ago. Since then I had 2 oil changes without it then since the loss of power I had another oil change where I added it. I also started using the gas additive hoping it would help but it hasn't. I did take off the intake and piping to clean it awhile back and the turbo didn't have any play then. The power loss happened right after a burn out that lasted about 3-4 seconds. I immediately thought the brakes were stuck.
I made a video but of course couldn't get it to make the noise but it does show the trucks loud ass ticking. Is this ticking normal? Or could be part of the problem?

you have a ball bearing turbo... sounds like the bearing cage might have broken and the bearings are chasing each other

this is why I say don't worry too much about a 6.7 turbo failure. They typically give you some heads-up and won't strand you.

On my '11 ,I noticed what sounded like rolling dry bearing noise ,for a few seconds after motor was turned off.Coming from turbo,it was quite noticeable .I was still under warrantee, and Ford dealership said it could have catastrophically failed,I was replaced ,and the noise at shutdown disappeared
