I am running autolites now with no complaints....
What is the complaint with Autolites, i havent really read much on them. They were free
Autolites have had issues expanding then when you go to take them out they wont come out.
From everything I have read and heard autolites like to swell up, the tip brake off in the cylinder (although that can happen to any GP, happens more often with autolites) threading on them sux, wear out faster. At least that is most of the research and word of mouth that I have gotten.
Okay i have had them out already after about 5k miles on them, so is that the only issue?
They seem to me like they are working fine, truck fires up in 10* weather fairly easily
a little wipe with some anti-seize goes a long way. spark plugs or glow plugsFrom everything I have read and heard autolites like to swell up, the tip brake off in the cylinder (although that can happen to any GP, happens more often with autolites) threading on them sux, wear out faster. I have been running the Autolite ones for 5000 miles with no issues. The ones I replaced were also Autolite. They didn't get stuck for me(although I could have been lucky). I know they were in the truck for about 2 years. I am sure they are not up to par with Bosch or Motorcraft glow plugs, but I'm sure they will get you by.
I should go track down some of those Oh My God posts from the past about those plugs. There were more then a few back when.
Replaced 7 out of 8 glow plugs today.. Halve of them were autolite, others motorcraft. Motorcraft came out just fine, but the not all of the autolites did. Question... the one that did not come out and the top of the glow plug broke off, so I had to screw it back in and leave the wire wedged in a crack to keep it out of the way. Does anybody have any concerns about leaving it off.. ie like shorting out or anything? It started just fine and run normal..Why did the plug stop right when the threads were clearing the hole and how does one get the F'er out???? Thanks
Its been a while but I think the bosch ones are the ones to go with, one thing I do know is stay away from the Autolite plugs. Autolite was used as a swear word back on the ole TDS IDI forums lol, tips would swell and break off very easily compared to other plugs.
EDIT: correction, motocraft ones, and here is my reference to back it up lol, "Glow plug removal article"
My Glow Plugs won't come out! Yes they are AUTOLITES. No I didn't know any better! I think the tips are swollen. They climb out until they reach the end of the threads then they stop climbing but turn freely. After playing with two of them I can get them to wiggle about an 1/8 of an inch up and down but they will not come out. I can still thread them back in but they need to be replaced.
I really don't want to take the heads off. I have too many projects on the go already. Please tell me there is another way. I remember reading about putting a blanket over them and firing it up. I also recall something about turning to tdc and removing the injector and applying vacuum and compressed air to get out broken tips.
The truck is a 1992 Ford F-350 4x4 Dually 28' Motorhome with Banks Turbo, Monster exhaust etc. 100,000 km / 60,000 miles. I bought it last summer at 96,000 kilometers. It runs great pulls hard and has no issues but it hard to start right now and is smoky till it warms up. It started well when I bought but after a month it became a little rough to start so I replaced the GP's. I asked what brand to buy and a Mechanic told me he uses Autolites so thats what I used. They lasted less than 4,000 kilometers and I am trying to change them out to BERU/Motorcraft right now.
PLEASE HELP!!!

So my buddy put these in his truck in an emergency back in april. He was up in Kentucky helping someone move and the GPC went out, so while he was at it he put all new glow plugs too. Only ones available were autolite, and he knew about the swelling issue, but planned on changing them ASAP when he got home. These glow plugs have 499.2 miles on them, so less than a full fuel load from both tanks. Truck is a '90 F-250 std cab 4x4 E4OD.
The one on top is a motorcraft BERU plug for comparison. We had to use a prybar and a pair of vise grips to get 3 of them out, those are the 3 with the mangled tops and plier marks.
Have heard of this issue over and over, but never seen the actual problem or a picture thereof, so I figured I would pass it on.
